Ablai Khan's Dream and Death (Version II)
In ancient times, the Kalmyks did not allow the Kazakhs to see the dawn or the sun. After Abilay Khan mounted his horse, he turned back the Kalmyks. On the other side of the Alatau, beyond the Altai Mountains, the Kalmyks could not settle and live. It was Abilay who drove the Kalmyks from Saryarka, pouring black blood upon them. He made the Kalmyks feel as if they were doused with water. He did not fight with the Russians, he became a nation; he did not fight with the Shurshits, he became a nation, and he was tied to both. He had fully come into his own, he had matured: – Now I will not allow the Kazakhs from Urgench, Bukhara, Kokand, and Tashkent to be taken by the Sart, – he called for the children of the three zhuzes, gathered his troops, and set off, arriving in Turkestan, where he placed his own son, Sultan Sydyk, in charge. Sultan Rustem, Sultan Shegen, Sultan Sydyk, Sultan Aubaqir, Sultan Abdylda – these five were the children born from the Sart woman. He went to Shymkent and Sayram and made a Sart named Abdirakhman his ruler. He went to Tashkent and made a Sart named Myrzakhamet his ruler. From there, he went to the Jyzak region, where he was hosted by a wealthy Konyrat, and that night one of his daughters-in-law gave birth to a son, who was named Abilay. That Abilay grew up and became a tribe (taipa). We spoke to the descendants of a wandering Kaiyp. After that, he set off and besieged Samarkand. That night, he asked his elder, Bukhar Zhyrau: – Today, reveal a vision for me! – he said. – Do not just lie there, Khan, you are the one who can foresee, – he replied. The next morning, when the elder came to present his vision to the Khan: – What did you see? – he asked. – Do not act as if you saw nothing; instead of asking me "what did you see," tell me what you saw yourself, – he said. Then the Khan said: – In my dream, a tiger came and lay down in front of my tent, resting its neck. I wondered, "What is this?" and when I looked, that tiger turned into a bear. "It was just a brand new tiger, why has it become a bear?" I thought, and then it became a dog or a bird. Then it turned into a fox, and then into a hare, or something else. I woke up, and this is what I saw, – he said. – Then the tiger that lay down in front of your tent is your fortune. You were once a tiger. Its lying down, unable to lift its head, is where you have reached your peak. Now your fortune will not rise again. Do not let it be said that "the once-great Abilay has died at the hands of the Sart," return safely from here! Now, the bear represents the times after you, a time when there will be struggles like a bear. Then the dog and bird represent a time when there will be struggles like dogs and birds. Then the fox represents a time when there will be struggles like a fox, living by dodging. Then the hare represents a time when there will be struggles like a hare, hiding from thicket to thicket to survive. If I speak of what I have seen and heard, the sun and the saints on the earth say: "Abilay will die; we are going to Turkestan for his funeral," and they are gathering "like a swarm and pouring like sand." There is nothing left but to return, – he said. Abilay Khan sent an envoy to Samarkand: – I have no quarrel or war. I have come to visit the saints. Let the main elders come for a feast! – he said. Fearing the hare's eyes, the Sart, who would dive into the ground like an arrow, was sitting there in fear. The thirteen kings, who were Kazakhs, had written in their histories how they had suffered from the Sart. They had released their women and girls, chickens, and quails into the mountains. They treated each other with respect and hospitality, and there Abilay Khan had a blue horse slaughtered and had a stone placed on its head. The people of Samarkand said: – This is a stone that has not been raised since the time of Amir Timur, – they said. Abilay Khan gave permission to his warriors: – Now there is no war. "A brave man finds a companion," find a nation in your lives! – and he went to Tashkent, married Myrzakhamet's daughter, and stayed for three months. After three months, he set off towards Arka, and when he reached the Arys River, Abdirakhman, who had been told to "take Shymkent and Sayram," gathered the barefoot Sart from Turbat Sultan, Rabat, Karabulak, and Mangkent, and stood in front of him, saying: – I will not let you pass! The Uysyn and Dulat who had been following him for food fled, and that is how they became known as "the Dulat with the wide hem." On a hill by the Arys River, the herdsmen and the servants stood still, and Abilay remained motionless. Then his elder, Bukhar, said: – One is the hem, the other is the sleeve, You have had a nation since ancient times. There is no one from the Middle Juz. The tip of his spear is gold, There is no one from the Little Juz. Now, looking at this, You have no other action to take, – he said. The Khan then regretted having dispersed his warriors, biting his thumb in despair, and he burst into tears. There, he was lowered into a fortress. This fortress has been called "Khan's Fortress" until today. When Abilay Khan laid his head on the pillow of death, Bukhar said: – O my lady, who has put me to sleep without sorrow, O my lady, who has embraced me without a wife, O my lady, who has made me tend horses without a return, If I were to sacrifice three people from the three zhuzes, Would your soul still remain! – when Abilay Khan said: – Stop, stop, if you say this, I will lose my faith, and you will become a liar. I ascended to the throne at the age of twenty, and I have been the Khan of the Kazakhs for forty-eight years. What good is it to have lived and aged for so many years?! I have not leaned the Kazakh's back against the tent or their mouth against the bread – that is one. I have not equated the value of a white horse with a man's value – that is two. I have not equated the value of a marksman who can shoot an arrow through a gazelle's eye with the value of two men. I have not equated the value of a blacksmith and a shoemaker with a woman's value, calling it "half a value," and I have not made a decision on it – that is three. These three regrets have left me, – he said. He passed away on a Friday, and his body was brought to the Sultan Hazreti, placed inside a white dome, and a stone was set on top. When Jalangayak Auder heard of Abilay Khan's death, he cried for three days and three nights. – My lord, why do you cry so much? – they asked him. – The great Abilay, who has been walking for so long, did not die in Saryarka, but died in the fortress of the Sart. Now the khanate remains with the Sart, the fortune has left the Kazakhs, the blessing has fled, – he said. The news of Abilay Khan's death reached Arka. They did not let the women, children, and families in the horde hear it. "How can we hear it like someone who rejoices at the death and asks for a reward? It is the day when "the forty of the dead" is celebrated. Let's announce it on the fortieth day and hold a feast!" – they said. Sarka, Seyten, Itkara, and Sultan said: – Today ... it has been forty days since we heard, – and they announced it to the horde and held the fortieth day feast. Later, when those who buried him and his companions came, they learned. They had held the feast on the day of his death, saying "it has been forty days since he died." It had been heard forty days before his death in Saryarka. According to our understanding, this is the history of Abilay.
