Bekbolat and Abilay
Around the Karakraly mountain, among the twelve clans of Argin-Karakessak, there was a wise man named Bekbolat, the son of Kazybek, known for his deep voice. One year, the youngest of his nine sons, born from his first wife, stole a herd of horses from Abilay Khan. Abilay sent an envoy to Bekbolat, saying, "Hand over the son who committed the theft; I will hang him!" Bekbolat replied, "I cannot hand over my son; he must have taken the livestock by mistake; let him take compensation!" Among the envoys, there was a man who envied Bekbolat. He went to the Khan, saying, "Bekbolat is trying to escape; if the Khan shows me disrespect, it will be easy for me to unseat him." Abilay, angered, set off with his men. Bekbolat gathered spear-wielding and shooting warriors outside his village and sent five young men to capture his son from outside the house, binding him with a rope and dragging him away. Although Bekbolat saw all this, he remained silent. After a while, when they caught up, Abilay had set up a tent in the southern area and was resting. Bekbolat approached his bound son and said: – Hey, Khan! How was I to you, and how were the other judges? – You were a peak, while others were hills, – replied the Khan. Then Bekbolat said: – Then, the fox of the Oral mountain, if chased around, the dogs cannot catch it; the white antelope of the Oral mountain, if the white shoulder comes, it will not flee, and even then, it will not be killed, – and he dismounted, taking his bound son with him. After the judge left, Abilay asked those around him, "What did you understand?" No one could speak. Abilay shook his head: – Bekbolat was a peak judge. He was one of the Khan's seven singers. He referred to himself as "the fox of the Oral mountain." When he said, "If chased around, the dogs cannot catch it," he was referring to you. When he said, "the white antelope of the Oral mountain," he was referring to me. When he said, "if the white shoulder comes, it will not flee, and even then, it will not be killed," he indicated that the Khan should not show his wrath, but the fate of the people is in your hands; do not behead for livestock or act arrogantly; he hoped for forgiveness. I have forgiven. Now let us all return to his village and lift his spirits. Bekbolat hosted the Khan in his spacious white yurt, offering a feast and conversing. After the meal, the judge said: – Safe travels! What is your request? – The Khan then said: – Oh, Beke, you have aged. You have ten sons. While you are alive, we have come to choose one of them as a judge in your place. Which one will you bless? – Bekbolat pondered deeply but kept his eyes closed. The reason was that all nine sons from his first wife were good. If he were to mention Tilenchi, born from the second wife, he feared the strong first wife. What to do? At that moment, Tilenchi, born from the second wife, stood up with a cousin and said: – Oh, how my grandfather's strength swells, Even if he swells, he fears my grandmother greatly. Grandfather, the younger ones have sense from the elders, If you do not say Tilenchi was born from the second wife, What is there that he cannot govern?! – Bekbolat opened his eyes wide: – Indeed, my child, I had hoped for that one. However, your nine brothers have the strength of nine young horses, while Tilenchi has the appearance of a weak calf. If not for this moment, – he looked at his first wife. The first wife did not act out of turn, indicating her hope for Tilenchi. The crowd searched for Tilenchi, and he was playing with the shepherds watering their sheep by the river. When brought before the Khan, one among the crowd said: – How can you, the wise son of a famous judge, play with shepherds? – Tilenchi replied: – There are two reasons for my play. First, I am the only thoughtful one among my grandfather's ten sons. While my nine brothers may lead today, tomorrow they will fly away like a ball. Therefore, I played, considering how to be a leader for my people rather than a follower. Secondly, many people come to my grandfather every day for requests. He notices them as they enter the door, giving a place of honor to the wealthy and seating the poor at the threshold. He judges without regard for the essence of the matter, but rather based on someone's fortune. I thought, if only I were a judge, I would not consider anyone's wealth or poverty, but would seat the disputants and the claimants equally before me, listening to them in turn, testing them internally. Tomorrow, whether my grandfather is alive or dead, will this authority not come to me? When my grandfather is approached, the shepherds and the poor, who cannot express their sorrows out of fear, will remember that Tilenchi, who used to play with them, is not the same. When they speak the truth, will I not express my fairness? Thus, I was playing for these two reasons, – he said. The white yurt was filled with people, and that day they raised Tilenchi on a white felt and appointed him as a judge, scattering silver. Bekbolat was pleased with both the Khan and his son, expressing his gratitude. The saying "Do not say he is younger; if he is wise, appoint him" has since spread among the elders.
