Ablai and Zharilghap
In Kokshetau, Abilay Khan, who ruled for forty-eight years, spent the night in the Bayanaul mountains with sixty companions during a campaign in the spring, finding it deserted and empty. At night, they went to bed hungry, and in the morning he asked: – Is there a place ahead where we can eat? A young Kereit replied: – Ahead, in the valley of Agysyk, there is a place called Kyzylshilik where Karakesek Zharilgap is. Abilay Khan asked: “Which Zharilgap?” – If you don’t know which Zharilgap it is, how would I know? – he replied. – If you don’t know, how do you know whether he is there or not? – Abilay Khan responded. – He is my uncle. Whenever we visited in summer and autumn, he would always be found there, – the young man said. – Well then, lead us to where you saw him! – Abilay Khan instructed. They arrived safely before noon. It is said that Zharilgap had a custom: “Death is unpredictable, and guests are unpredictable.” Guests do not announce, “I am going to so-and-so’s today.” Whether they arrive during the day or at night, he would prepare the house as if a bride and groom were coming, laying out bedding for them. He had a wife named Mańqan. The tent of Qazibek, known for his goose-like voice, had fallen, and the celebration had gone to the feast. He had four sons named Zholaman, Tastemir, Atybay, and Kenjebai. Two were with the horses, and two had gone to tend to the barren mares. There was no one in the house except for Zharilgap himself. He was lying on his bed, looking towards the wall. At one point, a nephew entered to announce. – Who are you? – he asked. – I am a nephew, Kereit so-and-so, – he replied. – What do you want? – he asked. – Abilay Khan is camped outside with sixty companions, – he said. Zharilgap, due to his obesity, could not move without someone lifting him by the hand: – Come, nephew, help me up, – he said. He lifted his head and settled himself on the bed. – Go, let the guests in, – he instructed. When Abilay Khan entered, he said: – Assalamu alaikum, dear guests, I have nothing to offer, this is my situation, – he said, – pour kumys from this vat for thirty people, and from that vat pour kurt for thirty people. Seeing that guests had arrived, the two sons who were with the horses came, and the two who were with the mares also arrived. There were no other people except for the four of them. They were also dressed beautifully. What they wore instead of a saddle was black sable. The servants and attendants were not dressed in rough leather, but in fine silk belts. Their service was like that of a slave, their clothing and appearance were like that of a young man. Abilay Khan, admiring them, said: – Zharilgap, you have prospered in sons and in servants. Just then, Mańqan, the wife, arrived. Two of her sons helped her from one side, and two from the other, guiding her in sideways, and she barely fit through the door. She waddled over and was seated next to Zharilgap on the bed, and they looked like two peaks side by side. – Have these people had something to drink? – she asked. – We have given all the kumys and all the kurt, – he replied. – The provisions for the night were prepared in the cart behind the load. Children, step aside! – she said. They poured from a large bowl, and it was enough for all sixty. The wife asked her husband: – Why didn’t you bring any livestock? – she asked. – There were brave men who said, “Let’s find them at such-and-such place,” and he didn’t pay attention to the need to slaughter livestock, – he replied. The wife said: – A woman prepares a gift to deceive a hasty one, – and she placed a dish of jent on the table for thirty. She put butter and cheese on the table for thirty. – The Myrza peak of Bayanaula and the Agys of Kuda’s Myrza peak were found in the same place, – she said. They say he split a jar of jent that was placed in the belly of a calf and had it put into the Khan’s bag. The son who was the horsekeeper was Tastemir. Zharilgap said: – Tastemir, “The Khan is the stake of the people, look, he is their sustenance.” This herd of horses is lying in their path. Bring the Khan to the center and catch the fat mare that the attendants like and is suitable for riding. Don’t say, “I will lose my strength, I will lose my milk.” When they say, “That’s enough, let’s stop,” then stop! – and he sent Tastemir to escort the Khan. The Khan went to the center of the horses. Tastemir was bustling about, handing over the horses and mares chosen by the attendants. Then Abilay Khan spoke to those sitting nearby: – When I said, “Zharilgap is there,” I asked, “Which Zharilgap?” This Zharilgap was known as the Karsun-Kernei Zharilgap among the Karakesek. People called him “Hero Zharilgap, Brave Zharilgap, Rich Zharilgap, Judge Zharilgap,” regardless of the name, he was a complete person. This Zharilgap was known as “Zharilgap, the son of Tileuke-Bertis’ Tileuke, Shakabay-Zharilgap, the thief Zharilgap.” People would keep talking. If he were a thief, he might have stolen horses, camels, sheep, or cows. But he didn’t steal that wife. If he had stolen, would a living person let him go? No one stole these four sons from anyone. Four puppies do not come from just anyone. They are all born from one another, they are relatives! This one is truly Zharilgap, whom God has blessed! – he said. He called Tastemir over: – Come, my son, I will make you my eternal child, – and he stood up and embraced him, saying they became friends. The blessing from Abilay Khan was that Zharilgap’s firstborn, Zholaman, became known as “Zholaman with sixteen sons.” From Zholaman came Koysyimes, from Koysyimes came Baymurin Myrza, and from Baymurin came Akai Qaji. From Akai Qaji came Maqat and Hasan, two brothers. The offspring of these two exceed a thousand horses and a thousand sheep. Around Agys and Kuda, there are four villages of Zharilgap. There is a saying, “If the front is a thousand, the back will be a hundred.” They are all rich, full of livestock and other wealth. Apart from them, in Degelen, there are four thousand horses in one tent. There are grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Zhanis Bay, a descendant of Akhtanberdi. The ancients used to say, “Wealth, nobility, and thievery do not fit into one lineage. Only these three fit into Zharilgap.” Why did he receive such a blessing? It is said that he received a blessing from a blessed hero like Abilay Khan. We saw the firstborn of Baymurin Myrza, Shotaq Bai. His character was gentle as a sheep, his nobility was without limits, he was a person of nature who could be called “noble saint.” From Shotaq’s wife were born Isaq, Ermek, Musa, and Sekerbay, who became famous bandits of their time. Last year and this year, the notorious Qyshqash also came from that Zharilgap. If you are alive, you will hear about the notorious bandit who emerged from Qyshqash.
