The blessing of Kabanbay
During the time of Khan Abilai, the heroes who emerged from the Kazakh people included: Karakerey Kabanbay, Kanjigaly Bogenbay, Kaz Dauysty Kazibek, Shakshakuly Zhanibek, Kokzharly Kokzhal Barak, Shanyshkyly Berdikozha, Syrym Malaisary, Baltakerey Tursynbay, Tarakty Baykozy, Altyke Zhidebay, Uaq Bayan, and others. All these heroes were known for breaking the strongholds of the Kalmyks single-handedly. Among the Kazakhs, there is no hero greater than Karakerey Kabanbay, and there is no elder greater than Uysyn Tole bi. Both of them were individuals who overcame old age and fell from their positions during the time of Abilai. In the Argin region, there was a hero named Altyke Dos. He was known for his bravery in battles against enemies and gained fame for his exploits. During one battle, he and his eight-year-old son, Kozhanazar, were unexpectedly captured by the Kalmyks. One day, the Kalmyks conferred and said, "We will keep one of you as a prize and send the other back to the people; decide among yourselves which one will stay!" "My dear father," said the eight-year-old Kozhanazar, "let me be the blue falcon, father! Leave me here and quickly find our people!" Then Dos the hero replied: "My son, the Kalmyk old man does not need you. He needs a young man, and he will take one of you as a child. It would be shameful for me to leave you, a child, in the hands of the enemy. If you return home safely, they will rejoice, saying, 'Dos is not dead; he has returned alive.' You will take a wife, have children, and one of your offspring will someday avenge me," he blessed his son, sent him back to their people, and stayed behind. As it was foretold, after Kozhanazar returned to his homeland, he took a wife and had children, naming his son Zhidebay. When Zhidebay was seven or eight years old, Kabanbay the hero came to visit the house of Almurat, Dos the hero's younger brother. Hearing this, Zhidebay thought: "I want to go, I want to see him, I want to receive his blessing!" He stayed awake all night. Just before dawn, he fell asleep, and his ancestor Dos the hero appeared to him in a dream, saying: "My son, go and receive the blessing from the renowned Kabanbay hero!" Startled awake, he rushed outside in his shirt and saw Kabanbay the hero setting off for a campaign at dawn, and he ran towards him. Seeing the boy rushing towards him, Kabanbay stopped. "Grandfather, I need your blessing, please give me your blessing!" the boy said, struggling to catch his breath. "Well done, my son, Dos the hero told me in my dream last night," Kabanbay said, giving his blessing, "I have four sacred red foxes; I have tied one for you, now go, my son!" With that, Kabanbay the hero departed. As he grew up, Zhidebay became known as "Altyke Zhidebay" the hero. He displayed great bravery in Abilai's campaigns against the Kalmyks, gaining fame among the three zhuzs. He became one of Abilai's prominent commanders. Interestingly, this man found it difficult to go on night campaigns, yet he could pinpoint the exact location he had in mind even in pitch darkness. In fact, if someone lost something in the dark of night, they would seek out Zhidebay the hero. The lost item would be found where Zhidebay had thrust his spear. When asked, "How do you find this?" Zhidebay would not reveal his secret. Abilai was also puzzled by this and thought: "Hey, I think he has a red fox," and one day he set someone to spy on him. At that time, they were on a campaign in the steppe, and the spy, while stealthily checking on the sleeping Zhidebay, saw a red fox lying under his shirt, on his chest. When the fox turned its head, the spy was so frightened that he fled. He went to the Khan and reported what he had seen. After seeing this, the spy's eyes became clouded, and he was left in complete darkness. It turned out that when Kabanbay the hero said, "I gifted you one of my four red foxes," it referred to the foxes that helped him during campaigns, sensing danger in advance and guiding him through the dark nights. One of these foxes had been given to Zhidebay. The blessing from Kabanbay significantly contributed to Zhidebay's reputation as the hero known as Karauylshy.
