Karakeray Kabanbay
In the time of old age, a citizen of the land came to inquire about Qabanbay's well-being: – There was no enemy you did not defeat, there was no place you did not go, do you have any unfulfilled dreams? – he asked. – Is there a person without dreams? Let me share my dream, listen, – Qabanbay began to speak. – When I was seventeen, I had just started riding horses, I went to the land of the Kyrgyz with forty companions and we set off with just a few cattle. I sent the cattle ahead and stayed behind to watch if anyone was coming after me. I saw dust rising behind me. Looking closer, I noticed it was just one person who had already caught up. As I looked, I saw it was a young man like myself. He came up and jabbed me in the neck with his spear, knocking me off my horse. – Are you Qabanbay? – he asked. – I am Qabanbay, – I replied. – If you are Qabanbay, then come with me, – he said. What could I do? He was stronger than me, so I followed him. We entered a large white yurt. Inside, there was a stout yellow-haired woman sitting. When I entered, she pointed at me and said to her son: – Why did you bring this infidel? You should have killed him right there. – It doesn’t matter, mother, – said her son, and he left the house. On a hot summer day, I was parched and thirsty. – Mother, could you give me something to drink? – Qabanbay asked. There was a yellow dog at the threshold, and it went outside, and then brought back a drink, – he said, handing it to me. I didn’t know whether to drink it or not, but I closed my eyes and gulped it down. Before long, the young man came back, took me by the hand, and brought me to another house, where he put a halter on my hands and feet and said to a woman: “You will take care of him.” I lay there for four months. Every day he would come to check on me, asking how I was. The bedding was prepared, and food was ready. One day, I don’t know if it was a big feast or a gathering, but everyone in the village set off for it. The young man's parents also went. All the able-bodied men went. While I was sitting there, the young man came back. He removed the halters from my hands and feet and freed me: – Well, Qabanbay the brave, let’s test our strength, – he said. We grappled, and when I entered, I struck my foot against the wall. “Now it’s my turn,” I said, and when I lifted him, my foot barely missed the roof, – Qabanbay said. – Do you know how long I have been waiting and keeping you safe? – the young man asked. – How would I know? – Qabanbay replied. – If you don’t know, here, – he said, taking off his clothes. The one I thought was a young man turned out to be a girl. When I brought you here, I intended to make you my husband as God has destined. “You have your wits about you, do you want to return to your people?” she asked. Can a man not miss his homeland, can a beast not miss its herd? Why wouldn’t I return if I could? She went outside and brought two saddles, two horses, and a pack horse. We saddled one horse and rode off together. We traveled for five days. The girl said: – Let’s find a place to settle down and hide; my father’s horse is no less than a thoroughbred, – she said. We came to a mountain hollow and entered a cave. We stayed there for three days. She would climb to the top of the mountain to keep watch. After three days, she said: – Now there is no enemy coming for us; my father has given up searching, he won’t find us now. – With that, Qabanbay took the lead. We reached the land of his people. We arrived at the edge of a lake and let the horses graze. Qabanbay said to the girl: – I am yours; let’s unite, will our joy and laughter ever cease? – he said. Since Qabanbay was not there, the girl broke the saddle, set up a silk tent, and prepared a bed: – I will go wash and come back; don’t look at me! – she said. Qabanbay took this to heart. He lifted the edge of the tent, and when he looked, the girl was just coming out of the water. Her skin was as white as snow, – Qabanbay said. The girl turned pale. “What happened to her?” he thought, and when he rushed over, he found that the girl was merely gasping for breath. He tried to shake her back and forth, but it was no use; the girl died. They buried her with honor. As her mother had said: “Why didn’t you kill this infidel?” Qabanbay’s eyes were sharp; the girl died from a glance. When Qabanbay looked at young livestock, they would die at his feet. This is the dream, my friends; if that woman were alive and they had a child, that child would be stronger than me, and no one would dare walk on the windward or leeward side of the Kazakhs. This is my dream, – said Qabanbay.
