The spotted saddle of Otegen Batyr
The story of the striped bowl of Otegen Batyr – our Horned Ancestor, which has been passed down from father to son, reveals many secrets from the depths of history. In the past, our esteemed ancestor Adil Dilebaev researched extensively about this great figure and shared many details regarding the striped bowl. From his tales, we gathered that Otegen Batyr and Abilai Khan were close friends, united in spirit and intent. At that time, Adeke said: – My ancestor's youngest son, Tarpan, had a descendant named Zholdasbay Tolembekuly, who reached the age of eighty-one and passed away in 1972. The striped bowl has been preserved in his home until now. The striped bowl itself is quite large. This bowl is called "Otegen Batyr's striped bowl." It was crafted by a very skilled artisan from the roots of an oak tree. It has four rings on the edges. It is convenient for a person to hold and lift. It can hold 4-5 buckets of water. It can fit the meat of a small cattle entirely. During celebrations, feasts, and Eid prayers, people taste food from this bowl. The color of the bowl is dark striped. That is why it is called "striped bowl." When I inquired about the bowl, Uali Algadayuly and Kydyrma Zhapekuly shared some stories. This was in June 1959. It seems that about 250 years ago, the last Khan of the Kazakhs, Abilai, gathered the heroes and elders of the three zhuz (hordes) in Kokshetau to hold a council, sending messages to the various regions. The council was called in response to the Russian Empire's encroachment into the vast Kazakh steppe. Abilai Khan was said to have convened the assembly with the thought: "How shall we respond to this, will we submit voluntarily or resist?" Notables from all three zhuz gathered for the council. From the Great Zhuz, there were Tole Bi, Boltyrik the Orator, Otegen Batyr, and Sauryk Batyr; from the Middle Zhuz, there was Zhangutty; and from the Little Zhuz, Esbol Datka participated. It is said that the hero Zhaugashty was also present. After much discussion, they concluded: "We will not go to war with the Russian people; they are a cultured and skilled nation, with cannons, guns, and other weapons. For the sake of the black cauldron and the yellow child, let us agree and submit by treaty. The Russians do not fight with clubs and sticks like the Uzbeks, Kalmyks, and others. Let us agree to lease the vast land." The treaty included the following points: 1) no conscription of Kazakhs into the army; 2) they will not settle but will continue to migrate with their livestock; 3) they will resolve their own governance through their own bi and bolystars; 4) the right to have multiple wives is granted; 5) they will exchange daughters for bride price. Thus, five or six issues were introduced. It was also stated that the beks and aristocrats would govern the country. When it came to land issues, they agreed to allocate land from the West, North, and Central Kazakhstan, starting from Uralsk. Satisfied with this arrangement, Abilai Khan invited the elders and heroes to the White Orda and, while pouring sweet yellow kumys from a large bowl, said: – Now, nobles, the matter is settled, and the treaty will be signed. Soon you will return to your lands, but I have one question for you. If you can answer and resolve it! – he said. Then Abilai asked: – What is the most precious and valuable treasure in the world? – he inquired. Each of those present gave different answers. One said gold, another said a house, another said sheep in the pasture, and another said horses. Then Otegen Batyr said: – Your Excellency, may I answer? – he asked. – Go ahead, – Abilai said, surprised. – The house remains with the camel, the camel stays on the hill, the sheep stay in the pen. If the horse runs away, it belongs to the enemy; if it is struck, it belongs to the wind; gold also remains on the ground. The most valuable thing in the world is you sitting here, isn’t it? – he replied. Abilai Khan said: – This little hero has answered correctly, – he remarked. "Little" referred to Otegen, as he was the youngest among them. When it was Otegen Batyr's turn to speak, he asked: – Your Excellency, may I ask you a question? – he said. – Why not, go ahead! – Abilai replied. – Does a person trust what they see, what they hear, or what is said? – he asked. – They trust what they see. – Then if I say I was with you, who will believe me? – and while holding the bowl from which kumys was poured by its ring, Otegen Batyr began to pull it towards himself, and Abilai, yielding to the conversation, said: – Alright, alright! – and handed the bowl to Otegen Batyr. My horned ancestor named that bowl "striped" and placed it in the home of Tarpan's younger wife, Kermekas. After Tarpan's death, the first wife’s children, Koikeldi, Jankeldi, and Abak, raised a dispute, and Abak's son, Tolek, along with his father, took the striped bowl from Kermekas. Kermekas was greatly displeased with the first wife and, striking the edge of the bowl with a knife, said: – I will finish when this light is extinguished, – marking it. The bowl bore a mark from that moment. Not long after, Abak's son Tolek fell under the accusation of theft and was to pay a large amount of livestock, agreeing to give the bowl as a ransom. Hearing this, a man named Tolembek gave the owner of the dispute his horse and took the bowl. That striped bowl remained with Zholdasbay until his death. After our brother Zholdasbay passed away, it was kept in the house of his brother Ualkhan Bekbatorov. Thus, the striped bowl has been passed down from generation to generation. There is no doubt that it is a sacred and revered artifact for all Kazakhs.
