The Testing of Abilai by Otegen
Once there was a poor man named Asan who borrowed a horse from Ötegen and rode it for about six or seven years without returning it. One day, Ötegen happened to meet Asan and sent his men to bring him back. The men caught Asan by the horse and brought him before Ötegen and Abilai:
Ötegen said to Abilai:
– I lost this horse along with twenty others, my lord, please give your judgment – he said. Asan replied:
– Aldiyar, I did not steal any horses. I only rode Ötegen's horse. It is true that I have not returned it for about seven years. Do not punish me unjustly. Please give your fair judgment – he pleaded.
Without listening to Asan's words, Abilai said:
– You will return Ötegen's twenty horses as sixty! – he declared.
The king's decree is one. Poor Asan went home crying and weeping, gathering horses from his relatives. Thus, he drove sixty horses and came before Abilai and Ötegen.
Abilai asked Ötegen:
– My hero, are you satisfied with my justice? – he inquired. Ötegen replied:
– No, I am not satisfied. There is no justice in a judgment that does not distinguish between right and wrong. I only wanted to test you. But you did not listen to the poor man's lament. You issued your judgment based on the status of the person. You did not heed his words, "It is my horse that I have been riding, do not punish me unjustly," – he said, and then to Asan:
– You must be unable to return the horse due to your poverty. I gave this horse in good condition, and it has no claim in either world. Take the sixty horses you brought back and return to your village – he ordered, sending Asan back home.
