What is the treasure in the world?
In Arka, a feast was held by a hero named Altynbek, and an invitation was sent to all the children of the three zhuz. Among the guests was Otegen, who first decided to greet the khan and turned towards the house where Abilai was sitting. The khan was in a six-cornered white yurt, engaged in conversation with ninety-nine biy (judges). Listening from outside while on horseback, Otegen heard Abilai ask: – My biy, what is the treasure of the world? – he inquired. One of the biy replied, “The treasure is the sheep in the pen, the horses in the pasture,” while others said, “Gold, silver, precious stones – these are the inexhaustible treasures.” Abilai was not satisfied with the answers of the biy and shook his head. The biy said to Abilai, “Your Excellency, we could not find the answer to your question; please tell us the solution yourself.” At that moment, Otegen, standing on horseback, said: – Oh, speak up! – he urged. – If you speak, then speak! – the biy in the house shouted. Then Otegen replied: – I am searching for ninety-nine oxen that have been muzzled. Abilai recognized the voice of the hero Otegen and said: – This is Otegen from the Uly zhuz. Bring him down from the horse and let him enter the house, – he instructed the biy. Then he added: – Sit quietly and do not make noise; when he says he is searching for ninety-nine muzzled oxen, he means you. Let us now ask Otegen what the answer to the question about the treasure of the world is. Once Otegen entered the house, Abilai offered him a seat on his right and said: – Hero, please tell us the answer to the words you have heard. – Otegen then surveyed the thoughtful crowd and said: – If you gather sheep, they will be in the pen; if you gather camels, they will be with the camels; if you gather horses, they will run away with the alarm; if they whistle, they belong to the enemy. The inexhaustible treasure of the world is the people. – After saying this, Otegen took off his hat and placed it beside him. Abilai also took his hat and placed it on top of Otegen's hat. Once the hat was placed on the other hat, Otegen held both hats together and said: – Do not be afraid, my hat, do not be afraid! Though it has no inside, it has been filled. Though it has no outside, it has been covered by this khan. If the khan takes back what he has given, it is acceptable; if he takes back what he has given to the commoners, it will be a child. – He then wore both hats on his head.
