The Prophecy of Ötegen
In August of one year, Ötegen gathered his fellow tribesmen and warned them that the winter would be harsh and unfavorable for livestock, urging them to move to a more suitable place for their animals. The elders of the village said, "Ötegen speaks wisely, drive your livestock and follow Ötegen," and they joined their children to Ötegen's caravan. On the way, they passed several villages. Ötegen also told the people of those villages, "This year there will be a disaster, do not stay here, drive your livestock together, we will save them from the disaster and return in the spring," he said. However, some people did not follow Ötegen and stayed behind.
As the caravan was about to leave, a woman approached the hero Ötegen and said:
"Father, my husband has been dead for several years. My child is young, and I have a little livestock, what should I do with it? Please give me your advice."
Ötegen replied:
"My child, add your livestock to mine, if I survive, I will return your livestock to you in the spring without any loss."
The woman added all her livestock to Ötegen's caravan and stayed behind with her child. The young men of the village, seeing this, mocked her:
"We might perish, but you will be safe with your cleverness. If there is a disaster, Ötegen, who is driving his livestock away, will be the first to perish," they laughed.
Thus, Ötegen found a soft wintering place and spent the winter there, saving his livestock from the disaster and returning to the village in the spring. Along the way, he safely returned the livestock of the widow, along with her newborn offspring. The young men who had mocked him during the winter shamelessly asked for help. Having lost all their livestock and suffering from the disaster, Ötegen gave them the livestock they requested and saved them from starvation.
