Mamai Batyr
Mamай was not only known for his fearless bravery but also for his exceptional skills in the art of war and tactics. One day, while leading a force of only about sixty men, he encountered nearly five hundred enemies. Initially, the Mamay troops retreated towards the reeds, quickly shifting to a tactical maneuver, and his wife advised him: "Throw the poles that have been cut down into the water on the way of the Kalmyks, and you will see what happens next." Indeed, the enemy soldiers stepped on the poles lying under the water, and they began to stumble one by one. The well-trained young men swiftly cut down the stumbling Kalmyks like sheep.
Another legend tells this. During a time when the Kalmyks were in power, they caused a commotion by blocking the road to the Asy pasture. They told the young men sent by Mamay: "If you want a place to settle, let your hero come himself." Upon hearing such words, Mamay mounted his horse, which he had not dismounted from for a long time, armed himself with all his weapons, and went himself. When the hero unexpectedly entered the fray, the Kalmyks began to shift to their malicious intentions, but Mamay's group quickly scattered them, engaging in a fierce battle. "If they give, it's from their hands; if they don't, it's from their path," thus Mamay seized the pass of the Asy mountains from the Kalmyks. In one of these fierce battles, or perhaps in another battle afterward, the exact details are unclear, but as Mamay was returning from the Kalmyks with forty-one soldiers, he fell ill and passed away on the way. The Kalmyks had poisoned the saddle and reins of the hero's horse.
