Good Janaydar (Version I)
The son of Külük, Tileuimbet, from him was born – Kuntu, from him was born – Janaydar. This Janaydar was a young boy during the time of Khan Abilai. He was known among the people as "Good Janaydar." At that time, Khan Inzharaï Sharip [Bukhara – E.Q. note] sent an envoy to Khan Abilai in Arkada: – Let him find the butter fat, – he said. Then Khan Abilai sent a messenger to the Külük Jänke batyr: Let him find a person who can provide a proper answer to my one word, – he said. Since Jänke batyr was in his prime, he sent the fourteen-year-old boy Kuntu's son Janaydar. When Janaydar entered before Khan Abilai, he asked without seating him: – My child, what will the butter fat be? – he asked. Janaydar immediately replied: – Did not the ancients say, "If the people are confused, the khan corrects it. If the butter is confused, the salt corrects it"? The butter fat of the people is their khan in the middle, and the butter fat that gives flavor to all the food in the world is the salt, my lord! – he said. From this, Khan Abilai understood that the Khan of Bukhara was asking for salt. The children of the three zhuz sent camels from the Kazakhs, and forty biys along with Janaydar were added as horsemen, and they sent a lot of salt. The forty biys who went were honored and hosted by the Khan of Bukhara. When it was time to return, the Khan of Bukhara asked: – Is Abilai greater, or am I greater? – The forty biys said: – You are greater; your lineage is noble, your land is noble, your nobility is that you are sitting in a city like Bukhara, wrapped in yellow gold on a golden throne. The nobility of your land is that it is suitable for praying in boots, – they said. The Khan of Bukhara asked: – Did Abilai send anyone else besides those you see here? – – There is a horseman boy in the escort, he is fourteen. – Then call him. They called him. The Khan of Bukhara said: – Hey, my child, am I greater, or is Abilai greater? The boy said: – Abilai is greater! The Khan of Bukhara asked: – How can Abilai be greater than me? – The boy replied: – Abilai's ancestor raised his bow to the mirage. He was born from light. Your ancestor is Akmangyt, Tokmangyt. When our Kazakh children play, they say: "Mangyt, say it in your mouth" – they play. If your lineage is truly noble, it would not be taken lightly, – the boy replied. – My child, is Abilai's place noble, or is my place noble? – he asked. – You are nobler than Abilai himself, and your land is nobler than his land. If your land were noble, would you bring water from Samarkand to drink, would you ask for salt from Saryarka? Abilai's place is Saryarka. If you go two steps, there is a spring. The clear water tastes sweet, the white fish tastes fatty. If you go two steps, there is salt. One house does not ask for salt from another house, – he said. The Khan of Bukhara, pleased with his words, considered that the gift he gave to the forty biys was equal to what he gave to the one boy. The place where he was called "Good Janaydar" is this. "Better to have a mountain-like ambition than a thumb-sized fortune" – this is it. His fame did not spread because he did not have luck on his side. When this Janaydar returned home from one side, his wife was found with a male child, cradling him in a cradle. – Wife, wife! Gently, free your chest. His chest is full of the remembrance of Allah, – he said. That child's name is Ötemis. Jänke batyr never let Janaydar sit at home. He would send him to gatherings in the center of the three zhuz. Wherever he went, he would always rise like cream from the water with his eloquence. At one gathering, Baydaly bi, who came from Quandyk, could not find a word to respond to Janaydar's words, so he belittled him: – Was this fellow's father's name Kuntu or Qitu? – he asked. Then Janaydar replied: – I have a husband who is a little crooked, I have a name that is a little strange. Whether my father's name is Kuntu or Qitu, What does it matter to me? I have a mind that is a handful, – he said. May God bless Good Janaydar!
