Er Janibek and Tilenchi Bi
At a gathering in Karkaraly, Kerey Er Janibek kept defeating the orators in debate. An old man said:
– You have lost to an old man from Kerey. Where is that Tilenşijan? – he asked.
The inviter went to fetch Tilenşijan, and when he was about to leave, his father Bekbolat said:
– He was a noosed black boar, my son; don’t let him catch you off guard, speak carefully, – he advised.
When Tilenşijan entered, everyone in the house stood up to show respect. Only Er Janibek pretended not to notice and remained lying down without moving. Then Tilenşijan said:
– This old man's father, Berdaulet, was the worst of the twelve Abak Kereys. Is this how a good person is born from a bad one? How disgraceful it is to lie with one noble's head as a pillow and to put your feet on another's! – he mocked the two noble-born people who were ignoring him. At that moment, Janibek opened his eyes, placed his hand on his forehead, and asked:
– Who is this boy? –
– This is your Tilenşijan, – someone replied.
– "Better to be an enemy with the good than a friend with the bad," my son, how well you have put it! I have seen many things. I have seen the Kazakhs, and I have seen the Kalmyks. At fifteen, I chased girls like a blue bull, at twenty-five, I washed my hands in the blood of enemies, and at thirty-five, I bound the children of three hundred with plain words. Bekbolat was the excess of the twelve Aris Arghyn; what would I be if I were born from Bekbolat? Berdaulet was the lowest of the twelve Abak Kereys; what would you be if you were born from Berdaulet? Am I not a bullet made from a sculpted wood? And you, were you not born from the bad? – he said.
In his old age, Er Janibek said: "This land will not be a home for the Kazakhs," and together with Karakerey Qabanbay, they moved one way and then returned, ultimately not changing their fate. While they were in this turmoil, one time Janibek came to visit Tilenşijan. When Tilenşijan was about to leave, he asked Janibek:
– Hero, do you have anything on your mind? –
– Tilenşijan, what if we renew our kinship? – Janibek replied.
It seems that Er Janibek's maternal uncle was Karakesek. Then Tilenşijan said:
– You are a cedar that has grown in the wilderness,
When the storm comes, you will break.
After being broken in the plains and hills,
Where will I find your place?
I am a dense black thicket,
I am easy to find! – he pointed out that there was no worthy relative to hold Janibek's place behind him and spoke of the abundance of his own lineage, thus repaying the old debt.
Then Janibek thought: "According to my dream, if I lose to a person, I would die; oh, my time has come, let me return to my people and die," and he returned to his homeland. Not long after, he passed away.
