Shakshak Zhanibek Batyr
Shakshak Batyr began participating in campaigns at around sixteen or seventeen years of age. At that time, the Kazakh forces had reached the near bank of the Volga River and seemed to hesitate. The enemy troops, unaware of their arrival, lay in wait. No brave soul dared to be the first to cross the wild river, and those on the near bank lingered for a moment. At that moment, a young man on a spotted horse boldly sets off for the crossing. Not only that, he shouts an unprecedented battle cry: "Amanzhol, Amanzhol!" Following the young man, everyone mounts their horses. That day, they utterly defeat the enemy on their side and reap abundant rewards. It is only when the excitement of victory begins to fade that the young hero comes to mind. The people want to know who the owner of the unknown battle cry is. It turns out that this young man is Shakshak, the third generation of the Ermen lineage descending from the Lesser Argyn. And that battle cry, Amanzhol, turns out to be the name of the boy's own father. From that day on, Amanzhol became the battle cry for the Argyn clans descending from the secondary wife. Previously, they had used the name Akzhol as their battle cry like other Argyns. From his very first step, demonstrating fearless bravery, Shakshak earns the special respect of Khan Esim. Gradually, he becomes the chief hero of that era. Shakshak Batyr proposes to one of his notable contemporaries' daughters and gives her the freedom to choose from among his six sons. All six are brave young men, and while the martial glory of the other five spreads far and wide, the girl chooses Koshay. When the girl's sister-in-law reproaches her, saying, "Why are you interested in Koshay, who tends sheep, instead of holding onto one of Shakshak's heroic sons?" the girl replies, "You don't understand anything. When Koshay is herding sheep, a white-bellied cloud always follows him. I have never seen a creature that connects heaven and earth." Koshay also holds his first wife in high regard. Their mutual respect becomes a legend among their peers. However, there are some interruptions in their happy and prosperous married life. One day, while the heroes are on a campaign, the Kalmyks raid their village and take several girls and women away. The Kalmyk Khan, who had never encountered such beauty before, forces Koshay's bride, who has not yet completed a month of marriage, into marriage. Seventeen-year-old Zhanibek, whose limbs are beginning to strengthen, first goes to his maternal uncle, the elder Bekhtas of the Great Horde, at the behest of his parents. The elder selects a horse from a herd of twelve stallions and lets him ride a wild bay that has not yet been bridled or roped. After riding it until it tires, Zhanibek goes to the blind Abiz of Karakerei. This man was likely a sage of the Middle Horde at that time. After learning the situation, the one hundred twenty-six-year-old elder says: "You are a boy who wants to lead the people and take the community! You are a boy who wants to speak and become a judge! If someone comes before you, do not spare your fairness – your foot will not falter before you, you are a boy who wants to lead the way. Do not take a thousand companions, take one – one person can bring fortune to a thousand, if you do not spare your fortune – your companion will not leave your side. In your youth, pay a large bride price and take a wife; that is the time for a boy to become a khan and for a girl to become a khanum," he blesses him. "Just as a true stallion is known by its gallop and a falcon by its flight," a boy who will reach far is felt from his very first step. After receiving advice from his maternal uncle in the Great Horde and listening to the sage of the Middle Horde, young Zhanibek comes to greet the ninety-year-old wise elder Taigan of the Kereit clan in the Lesser Horde to fulfill the purpose of uniting the three branches of the Kazakh hearth. This elder is known to have a stubborn character. When Zhanibek, upset with him, turns to leave, the elder Taigan stops him and says: "Do not turn the head of your horse, stand still! I have turned your heart with a single word due to my stubbornness. 'Do not let the ox go uphill – your wings will tire, do not face the bad – your back will break,' this is it. Even if you reject everything else from the stubborn old man, remember this wisdom!" From this journey, Zhanibek returns to his village rejuvenated. Hearing his well-structured story about the journey and the invaluable words of the wise elders, his father, Qoshkar Batyr, feels uplifted. He takes his son with him, and that spring, they go to Karakum to announce a gathering of the heads of the three hundred clans. All the good people of the Kazakh community have come to the gathering. The great Taukhe, who held all Kazakhs under one roof, the legendary judges Tole, Qazybek, Aiteke, and the heroes who struck like lightning against the enemy, Karakerei Qabanbay and Qanjyghaly Bogenbay – all are present. Especially during this gathering, Bogenbay, slightly older than the other heroes, seems to have captured everyone's heart. He is a hero who can lead others with both his words and actions. He conveys the people's desire for revenge with eloquent speech and makes it clear that the time has come to deliver a decisive blow to the Dzungars. He inspires the gathered crowd so much that it seems there are no words left for others to speak, and most sit nodding in agreement. At that gathering, it was decided to quickly initiate a large-scale campaign against the Dzungars. The leadership of the united forces was entrusted to Qanjyghaly Bogenbay... A large detachment on the left was led by Qabanbay Batyr. Seventeen-year-old Zhanibek joined this detachment. Thus began the first campaign of the three most notable Kazakh heroes of the eighteenth century together. Ahead lay the paths of heroism. After this, poets and storytellers began to sing of the exploits of these three without separating them. The Kazakhs, who were chasing the Dzungars fleeing from Russia, stop to rest. They bring dried horse meat to their pathfinders, pour water from their flasks, and prepare their breakfast. In one tent sits Abilay, and in another, the proud Shakshak Zhanibek Batyr. As the hero begins to smoke a cigarette carelessly, a young Kazakh man approaches him and says, "Zhanibek Batyr, please hand me your cigarette pipe," reaching out from his horse. Zhanibek pretends not to notice and shows his displeasure by tapping the tobacco from the pipe onto his heel and leisurely putting it in his pocket. Soon, the Khan and the hero mount their horses, and each clan lines up under their banners. To determine the enemy's strength, when they ask, "Who will go for reconnaissance?" the young man who had asked for the pipe is the first to step forward. After returning from reconnaissance, when Zhanibek asks, "Are there many enemies?" the young man replies, "Many for the coward, few for the brave." The battle begins, and the Kalmyk force consists of about ten thousand men. The Kazakhs suffer heavy losses and eventually flee. A tall Kalmyk with a pitch-black horse rides into the Kazakh ranks and brings several men down from their horses. In the midst of this group, Zhanibek exclaims, "Oh my, it seems no Kazakh has been born to defeat this scoundrel!" At that moment, the young man breaks away from the group, turns back sharply, and readies his bow. The Kalmyk stumbles and falls from his horse. The fall of the Kalmyk standard-bearer instills fear in the enemy. The Kazakhs take advantage of this and counterattack. Thus, they seize victory from the enemy. Only then does Zhanibek Tarhan, having rekindled his pipe, call the young hero to him and say, "Hero, now is the time to smoke," offering him the pipe. Thus, Baygozy Batyr begins his path to heroism, and from that moment on, his name becomes known to the people.
