The placement of Janibek Batyr at Abilay's right knee.
The Kazakh forces led by Abilai, who set out against the Dzungar invaders that came to conquer the Kazakh steppe with great preparation and overwhelming strength, fought fiercely. Retreating at times and winning at others, during one advance, the Kazakh forces again became disoriented and fought in retreat. Among the troops that were holding back the pursuing enemy was Abilai. It was difficult to lead the soldiers into battle from behind the fleeing ranks, especially since the horse, worn out from days of galloping, was also slowing down. Noticing this, Zhanibek came up from the side and cut in front of Abilai, saying: – Aldiyar Taksir! Your horse is worn out. Ride my horse and stop the soldiers ahead. Otherwise, the pursuing enemy will not spare us. I have never seen anyone from our people fight alone against the enemy, – he says. Although Abilai found the young man's words appropriate, he considered changing horses to be a matter of pride: – Your horse seems stronger than mine; you go and stop them, – he replies. – Taksir, – says the young man who has joined him, – I cannot be you. My fierce spirit has no strength to lead many, I only have the will to block the enemy and fight! Turning sharply to the armed forces and the fiery words of the young man, Abilai believed his words but, not wanting to lose his pride, prepared to fight the enemy alone again: – You are young, my son, the enemy is strong; you may perish, – he began to say when Zhanibek, filled with anger, drew his sword: – Rather than let your head be taken by the enemy and tied to their saddle, let me cut it off myself! – he declared. Who knows whether Abilai was intimidated by the young man, whose eyes sparkled with fire and whose words radiated bravery, or if he found the advice to stop the retreating forces reasonable, but in any case, Abilai handed his horse to Zhanibek and mounted the young man's blue stallion to head towards the retreating forces. As soon as Abilai left, all the soldiers who had been holding back the enemy turned their horses around. Only Zhanibek, along with a few companions, continued to engage in combat, taking turns in single combat with two enemy heroes who had broken away. When he beheaded both of them and tied their heads to his saddle, the pursuing enemy forces also turned back. Victorious, Zhanibek led his companions back to the main force, where the people who had received news from behind had gathered and were resting. Zhanibek tied Abilai's gray stallion near the khan's tent, found his own camp, and took a rest. The early-rising Abilai was informed that the heads of the two heroes, who had been tied to their saddles, were still tied to the gray stallion. After having the horse brought to him, Abilai said: – Alright, alright! It is not just any man's head! The enemy's strength has fallen, and they have stopped! Find the owner of this blue stallion, – he ordered. Although Abilai's scouts found the horse's owner in the camp of the Abak Kerey, the leaders of the Kerey camp replied: – Send our greetings to the khan; the hero is sleeping and has not yet awakened, – and sent them back. The scouts who went to call Zhanibek a second time brought back the response from the camp leaders: "The hero has three wishes; if they are fulfilled, he will come." Upon hearing this, Abilai said: – Indeed, it must be so; is it not a day when the enemy has taken the initiative, and the men have lost their sleep! – and he looked at his advisors and chief heroes as if to ask, "What do you say?" The people, who had been listening to the new events, were eager to see the brave young hero and said: "The order is from you, Taksir; we will protect the unity and support the hero!" Abilai, wearing a fur hat tilted back, said: – Let him come here and state his wishes, – he said. Hearing this from the scouts, Zhanibek brought the leaders of the Kerey camp to Abilai and said: – Aldiyar Taksir! – and bowed. Taking his advisors and commanders with him, Abilai, draped in a golden robe, said: – When the enemy was attacking, I recognized your fierce spirit when you were holding back the enemy while I was leading the troops. You have broken the enemy's spirit, and you have proven me right. The ancients used to say, "The fairness of the khan is the foundation of justice." State your desires; if you speak, speak freely! – he said. Abilai was particularly impressed by Zhanibek's selfless bravery. When he saw such bravery, which is not common, he gathered all the troops and, in front of the crowd, praised the hero, as was the ancient custom of the khans. As a brave commander and a wise politician of his time, Abilai's public praise of the heroes was not only a reflection of his own inner joy but also a necessity for the khans of a nomadic people without a permanent army, who would gather troops from various clans and then disperse them in times of peace. This work was supported by heroes like Qabanbay, Bogenbay, Malaisary, and Otegen. These few, yet highly respected individuals were not only the golden pillars of each clan but also the golden pillars of the khan's court, which governed the people. Uniting the people who had been born and raised between Bulanay and Balkhan, who had washed their clothes and settled wherever the land was fertile, was a lesson of history and a necessity of the times of warfare. The internal discord and disputes of the people were also resolved through the counsel of these individuals. Therefore, to strengthen his khanate, Abilai sought out and held onto people like Zhanibek. He would elevate their bravery and spread it across the four corners. In this instance, he praised the young hero Zhanibek's few deeds as if they were many in front of all his advisors and commanders. The young man's bravery and Abilai's show of respect for him would soon spread to every corner of the vast Kazakh land, and this act of bravery would inspire many young people's thoughts and spirits. For this reason, Abilai elevated the young man's honor in battle and publicly praised his bravery in defending his homeland. – My hero, – said Abilai after asking for Zhanibek's name, patting him on the back, – you say you have three wishes; now state your wishes! – Taksir, – said Zhanibek, – we are the people of Abak Kerey, in the land of Er Qosay, on the slopes of Saryarka, in the heart of the Altai, we were a people who stood as a shield for the Kazakhs, cutting off the path of Khan Chinggis, tearing apart his armor. The mighty Chinggis suddenly slaughtered our khan, scattering our people like sparrows, breaking our roofs and destroying our hearths, driving us from our land. Since that devastation, we have not been able to lift our heads. Now, in your time, we wish to join the ranks of the people and take our place at your right side. Then, Abilai, who understood the thoughtful young man, said: – Is there justice in a khan who does not give a place at his right side to a hero like you? State another wish! – he said. – If you truly grant me a place at your right side as the people of Abak, I wish to gather our soldiers and appoint our commander. I wish to sharpen my spear and wield it against the enemy. Abilai patted Zhanibek on the back, expressing his pleasure at the words of a man who would lead the people: – May your wish be accepted by Allah! State your third wish! – he said. – Our people, Abak, have long been a proud nation, raising banners and gathering troops. Now, when you appoint a commander and prepare the troops, please designate a banner that will be raised over our heads and on our mountains, – said Zhanibek. In front of the large army, Abilai presented a large banner made of fine silk, adorned with red and yellow tassels, mounted on a three-cubit spear. Zhanibek, mounted on a white horse and draped in white armor, took the banner in his hand. The Abak Kerey vowed: "Even if we have to sacrifice our lives in the treacherous paths and muddy crossings, we will not pass in front of Zhanibek!"
