Ablai Khan's Test of Zhanibek
The tale of the young hero Zhanibek's bravery before the enemy quickly spread as a legend among the people, and Khan Abilai decided to test him thoroughly. The opportunity arose on a stormy night when the wind roared and the rain poured down. Abilai's large army, setting out for a campaign, passed a few kilometers beyond a wooden grave in the dense, dark night. The autumn sky shimmered like a mirage, sometimes clearing and sometimes clouding over, with the downpour alternating between heavy rain and brief pauses. Stopping his troops and setting up his tent, Abilai called for Zhanibek: - "These young men seem to be exhausted and weary from the rain," he said. The noble-hearted, naive hero thought, "Is the Khan truly perplexed?" - "If the Khan were to die in battle, he would be called a martyr; what sense is there in dying while just watching? But the night is dark, and finding firewood is also a challenge for us," he said, genuinely astonished. - "Then you won't be able to find firewood; go and bring back the wooden dome from the road!" said Abilai. Without delay, Zhanibek sent one of his companions to lead a camel and reached the grave, starting to dismantle the dome. At that moment, from among the fresh earth, ghostly figures appeared, glowing and screaming. - "Even if it’s a grave, it was our shelter; who is stripping us bare?!" they cried out. In the desolate night, this fierce voice echoed off the dome, shaking the heavens. Zhanibek's two companions, losing their wits as if the sky had split open, stumbled and fled, leaving their horses behind. Then Zhanibek, undaunted, said: - "Hey, spirits, be quiet! The dead may rest, but the living Abilai is about to freeze to death," and he continued to dismantle it. The ghostly figures, dragging their white shrouds, rushed towards him. Zhanibek then shook them off to either side: - "If you are spirits, God has not written this world for you; if you are demons, I will strike you down!" he declared, charging forward. The two spirits jumped and disappeared into the earth. Only then did the hero notice that his companions had fled, and he loaded the wood from the grave onto the camel and headed towards Abilai's tent. These "spirits" were actually people sent by Khan Abilai to test Zhanibek, dressed in white clothing. When they reported back to Abilai about what had happened, noting Zhanibek's boldness in charging at the spirits, the amazed Khan Abilai remarked: - "A brave man who is not afraid of a ghost rising in the dead of night, how could he falter against an enemy in open battle?" The next day, Abilai called for Zhanibek again: - "What marvel occurred last night? It would be good if we did not anger the spirits," he said. Zhanibek, not taking this matter to heart, replied: - "You were the Khan and the chief of this land, I was its steadfast hero. I did not question What you commanded," he said, reciting like Qazybek.
