Zhidebay Batyr (Version I)
In his old age, he recalls his youth companion Karamen, wanting to share memories of their younger days and discuss the changes that come with aging and fatigue. Since communication in those days was only possible by horseback, he couldn't go himself, so he called a young man who knew the people and understood the meaning of words: – My dear, I had a friend named Karamen in the Tobykty tribe. It has been many years since I last saw him, and I miss him. I cannot go to find him myself; he has also aged and cannot come looking for me. The words he says will be memorized by the young man. The five lines from Jidebay are: "There is hope in four things, but no hope in one thing." The six lines are: "I have fallen into the hands of the enemy as a Muslim, I have been troubled searching for the cattle of five ancestors. Sixty horses do not form a herd, seventy sparrows chirp, eighty chicks are nesting, and ninety eggs are waiting to hatch, but when they will hatch is uncertain." In the summer, after traveling for several days among the densely populated summer pastures, the young man finally reaches Karamen. After resting for several days and being assured of the well-being of the people, the young man decides to return. Then Karamen asks: – If Jidebay is alive, did he not send me any other greetings? The young man conveys the greetings of the hero. After pondering for a while, Karamen reflects: – "What he means by 'There is hope in four things' is that a person goes through life with four hopes: 'I hope to grow up, I hope to multiply alone, I hope to become rich from poverty, I hope to recover from illness.' What he means by 'there is no hope in one thing' is that, alas, after the spring and summer have passed, like a tree with dried leaves, the sweet life lived together with a spouse in youth has returned to the hands of the daughter-in-law. If a two-inch lid is placed on a four-inch mouth, it will only be sufficient for the child then," he said. What he means by "I have been troubled searching for the cattle of five ancestors" is that the brave hero has aged and become blind; his five companions from youth would be a musuak, a tashpuk, a handkerchief, a knife, and a whip. To gather these together, he would spend the time until noon searching and feeling around. He should put a pocket on his chest and a pocket on his side, he said. And what he means by "Sixty horses do not form a herd" is that sixty years is the time of strength and courage that does not yield to the enemy; what he means by "seventy sparrows chirp" is that "at seventy, you only have the strength of a sparrow left." What he means by "eighty chicks are nesting" is that "at eighty, I lie in bed like a chick in a nest." What he means by "I do not know when the ninety eggs will hatch" is that "I am over ninety years old, one foot in the grave, waiting for the white death to come," he said.
