The Ingenuity of Baikozı Batyr
Tarakty-Baikozy was a prominent and famous person. One year, there was a drought, and his horses fled, stopping only at the ice of the Irtysh River. Baikozy followed his horses into the Irtysh. After retrieving his horses from the thicket, he drove them toward his homeland when the sun came out. In the evening, as he was about to camp, he greeted and entered the house of a local resident. In front of the main room sat an old man, seemingly over eighty years old, with a wooden bed decorated with bone carvings on the right side. In front of him, a girl wearing a feathered sable hat and a long white dress was singing and reciting poetry while holding a dombra.
When Baikozy entered, the girl stopped her song, placed the dombra on the luggage, and bowed deeply to offer seats to the guests. The old man asked:
- "From where did you drive the horses?"
Baikozy replied:
- "From a place called 'Jalgan'." Hearing this, the girl said:
- "Your village, your people are in Jalgan,
While your only beloved is left behind,
As you wander with the horses,
Someone has gone into her embrace."
Baikozy responded:
- "Oh, the words spoken boldly by Bedirek of Betpak,
How unashamedly they come from the face of his grandfather!
Who do you think can control it, my dear?
If God does not grant,
Even the owner of the herd!" His father then said:
- "My dear, you have won, put on a robe!"
