Sarkoz and Zhanibek
"The Great Horde submits to the Uysyn, and the Uysyn submits to the Sarköz." This proverb arose from the following event. During the time of the Kublai Mongols, in one battle, the hero Sarköz of the Great Horde broke through the Mongol fortress and displayed exceptional bravery. After the battle ended, the heroes gathered from various regions began to disperse to their homes. One of those who was pleased with Sarköz's courage was Zhanibek, a member of the Argin tribe from the Middle Horde. He invited Sarköz to his village and hosted him with great hospitality for several days. They became friends through their shared experiences in battle. According to the Kazakh custom of "the guest must also invite the host," Sarköz should have invited Zhanibek to his home in return. However, he did not do so. When parting, he recited the following verse to Zhanibek: - When I went before the Khan, The Khan did not cut my tongue. When I went before the people, The people found no fault in me. When I return to my own home, May my fate be given to the dog. To solve this riddle, Zhanibek the hero set out the following year, accompanied by his friends, to the land of the Great Horde. On the way, after passing through Zhetysu, they encountered a large village with many livestock. Upon asking a shepherd, they learned it was the village of one of Sarköz's sons. This time, the travelers passed through eighteen villages, all of which belonged to the children of Sarköz. Eventually, they reached the village of Sarköz himself. They tied their horses to a large tree half a kilometer from the yurt. As Zhanibek looked around, he noticed someone by the boiling cauldron in front of the white yurt. The figure resembled Sarköz and seemed to be stirring curds. He had a stirrer in his hand. "No way," Zhanibek thought to himself, "it must be someone else who looks like him. Why would a man, especially a hero, be stirring curds?" However, Zhanibek was mistaken. As he approached, it was indeed Sarköz, dressed in a light robe. He wore a cap and held a curd stirrer. Recognizing Zhanibek, he opened his arms wide and rushed to embrace him. The two heroes greeted each other with a friendly embrace and inquired about each other's well-being. At that moment, a booming voice came from inside the white yurt: - "Oh, the bottom of this cauldron has burned! What kind of fool has come here, and why is the old man running to it?" – as he spoke, a white dog came out of his mouth and a blue dog entered. The travelers, stunned as if struck by lightning, turned to look at the door, and a beautiful, elegant woman emerged from the white yurt. Zhanibek, confused, looked at Sarköz. Sarköz, hesitating, looked down and quietly said: - "Hero, you must remember what I said last year. The riddle I hinted at was this. Tell me, what remedy is there for this?" Zhanibek then drew his sword from its sheath and said, "The remedy is this," and struck off her head. For the price of that woman, Zhanibek the hero gave his sister to Sarköz without a bride price. The proverb mentioned above arose in connection with this event.
