Tughel Batyr
In a battle where Tughel the hero participated, the Dzungars were utterly defeated, and the enemy's livestock and property were plundered, with many of their people taken captive. Among the abundant spoils was the beautiful daughter of a famous Kalmyk lord. Would a hero like Tughel let such a noble beauty go to someone else? Moreover, what harm would it be for a wealthy, respected, and extraordinary hero to take as many wives as he wanted? The captive girl had no power. Even though he had several wives before, Tughel's heart was set on taking this beauty as his wife. But the girl was unwilling to comply. - "My life is no more valuable than the relatives who died by your hand in battle," said the girl. "Just behead me!" Tughel's words were persuasive: - "You are young and beautiful. You have the opportunity to find a suitable companion from our land and live a happy life." - "No matter who I was before, now I am a captive. My tomorrow is that of a servant. It is better for me to die than to become a servant in the hands of the enemy who has slaughtered my brothers." She was indeed a girl of noble descent. Proud and beautiful, such a quality would be the cherished dream of every hero. Tughel was determined to make this girl his wife by any means necessary. He expressed his warm feelings and love for her. The girl had heard of Tughel before. He was not only the greatest hero of his people but also a wise leader. He was wealthy and had an attractive appearance. To be a companion of such a man would be the cherished dream of every beauty. - "Then let it be this way," the girl said, indicating her willingness. "Only my status should not be less than that of your other wives. I should have my own separate house, and my own attendants. I do not want to hear the disgraceful words 'servant' or 'captive'." Tughel had several wives. Nevertheless, they both agreed to this. The girl added: - "If this promise is broken, I will find my people." You cannot oppose that. Tughel agreed. The girl converted to Islam. Their marriage was solemnized, and she was named "Karakoz" in Kazakh. Several years passed. The daughter of the Kalmyk lord demonstrated her nobility. She mastered the customs and traditions of the Kazakh people well. She exemplified kindness, humanity, and justice. Was Tughel's affection and intention shifting towards this second wife? Although some of his other wives were jealous and envious, they could do nothing but try to sow discord among them... Eventually, the time came to humiliate Karakoz. When Tughel returned to his village after a long campaign, it had become customary for him to dismount and be greeted by his wives. One day, when his other wives came out to greet him, Karakoz was not among them. She must not have received the news. However, it seemed that Tughel had received different information, as he was seething with anger inside. Later informed, when Tughel arrived at the house of his first wife, it felt as if the end of the world had come for Karakoz. Her "ignorance," "servitude," and "inability to bear weight" from a lowly background were thrown in her face. At that time, Tughel had three sons with Karakoz. The youngest was still nursing. Despite how much he had mistreated her, the hero must have thought that a woman with three children would not forget her homeland. Did he think that her honor, love for her own land, and people were greater than that of a famous husband or her own children? In the morning, when the hero woke up, he found that Karakoz was no longer in the house. It seemed she had spent the evening saying goodbye to her three children, kissing them one by one, and had quietly packed her provisions in the middle of the night, setting off towards her homeland. "Anger is in front, wisdom is behind." Did she not realize how far she had gone in her anger the night before? She did. A spoken word is like a fired bullet. It cannot be taken back. The secrets of the woman who had been his companion for five or six years were known to him. She does not act thoughtlessly; she does not turn back from her path. Nevertheless, it was necessary to catch up and speak with her. The hero, whose horse had never been outrun, galloped southwest. He knew his destination, and the mare was swift. However, Tughel caught up with her at the junction of nine roads. There, Karakoz was resting her mare on top of a hill. This was the first time Tughel had seen her in three or four months since he had set out on his campaign. Although she looked a bit thinner, she was still very beautiful. Tears welled up in her dark eyes, but she maintained her calm demeanor, determined not to reveal her inner feelings. "What courage, what bravery," thought Tughel. He regretted having acted rashly the day before without understanding the situation. What had he said when he first expressed his feelings to Karakoz? "A promise is made in the name of God." This promise was not made by the mouth of a coward, but by the mouth of a man, a Kazakh hero, wasn't it? What had happened? No, Tughel decided he would still show his bravery. - "I did not come to take you back by force," he said to Karakoz, greeting her calmly. "The heart does not obey strength. It is true that I acted foolishly in my anger. Is that your grievance? Or is it something else? I came to talk." Karakoz knew that Tughel loved her deeply. Therefore, even though his other wives conspired against her, throwing all sorts of slander and ridicule at her, Karakoz ignored it all, as she valued Tughel's fairness, humanity, and kindness towards her, enduring and accepting everything. Karakoz's ancestry was of famous people who possessed both bravery and wealth. Her maternal grandfather was a renowned shaman. Like her grandfather, who had extraordinary qualities, Karakoz was also a seer, a prophet, and a unique individual who loved freedom and independence. It was these qualities that a mysterious force was taking her away from her three children, her famous husband, and the community she had grown close to over five or six years. Karakoz received Tughel, who had chased after her, with a calm demeanor. Sitting atop an unknown hill, the words of the famous hero and the wise beauty, which would become a legacy repeated by their descendants centuries later, were unknown to the current generation. - "According to our promise," Karakoz said softly, "if I were to be mistreated as a servant or captive, I was supposed to find my people. The promise has been broken, and I am leaving. The spirits of my ancestors are calling me. I have my own homeland, my own land, and my own relatives. All of them are dear to my heart and precious to my eyes." Tughel sensed that she would say this. Many Kazakh girls had been taken captive in Kalmyk lands and had escaped to find their homeland. Their people were grateful and honored them. These were the true noble children devoted to their homeland. So why should we condemn the actions of the Kalmyks? - "But do you not feel pain for the children you leave behind?" This was Tughel's last and most serious question. - "Of course, I do. I was waiting to entrust them to you as a promise. If my prophetic abilities do not deceive me, let me tell you about the qualities that will be bestowed upon these children. - "My firstborn will not be an ordinary man. This name was not given to him for nothing; he will be both a hunter and a politician, a brave warrior. My second child, Shuaqim, will live a peaceful life, like the gentle rays of the sun. He will be a bringer of blessings. And Taymasim... He will be the one who will elevate your honor and become your pride. The prophetic and healing qualities that I possess will be passed on to him. He may even be able to breathe life into a corpse. These are the treasures I leave behind for the Kazakh people, who have become my second homeland, and for you, a hero of that people."
