The naming of Senkibai as "Akiyq Suңqar"
In his youth, Senkibai was a student under the guidance of the elder Moynaq bi. One day, two men from the Altai region and Karakesek came to Moynaq bi with a dispute. From the conversation, Senkibai immediately sensed that there was something wrong with the case of the man from Altai. Before letting the men enter to hear the case, he opened the door of the yurt and said: – Good, grandfather! – turning to Moynaq, he pressed his right hand to his chest and stepped out. After closing the door, Moynaq smiled slightly and asked the elders sitting nearby: – What did that Boq terek say? They replied that they did not feel or know anything. Then Moynaq said: – Didn’t he say, “The one who does not pull in his belly will break his back”? It must be that the accusation against the man from Altai is just a baseless slander, – he expressed his conclusion. At that time, disputes over widows and land had never ceased. Ultimately, these issues escalated to cattle raids, harming the unity and peace of the people, leading to discord among closely-knit families. In such turmoil, the people called upon Moynaq to mediate a significant dispute. The aging and ailing bi summoned Senkibai and said: “You will go to resolve this dispute. As for what to say and do, follow my instructions based on the actions of the disputants!” – giving him tasks as before. At that time, Senkibai was fifteen years old. As he was about to set off to deliver justice, he approached the door, turned to Moynaq, took off his hat, and clasped his hands, saying: – Good, grandfather, may I have your permission to say a word? Moynaq, by nature a stern and forbidding man, looked intently at Senkibai and said: – Speak your wish! Then Senkibai said: – Good grandfather, you are instructing me to say “do this” and “do that” when resolving disputes. Should I express what you have taught me if the opportunity arises, or should I just keep saying, “My good grandfather said this, my good grandfather said that”? His grandfather glanced at him sharply and, with a stern expression, said: – Boq, go ahead; just go, – and remained silent, looking down. Senkibai showed respect to his “good grandfather,” bowed, and set off... From then on, Senkibai rode in place of Moynaq bi. He became known as a wise and fair judge, resolving complex and contentious issues without falling short of his “good grandfather,” earning the satisfaction of both sides. Years passed. He became respected among his people and was known as “Ozhan.” This was during the time when his eldest son Senkibai returned victorious from a fierce battle against the Dzungar commanders alongside Abilay Khan’s large army, having established his own household. Thirteen years – a cycle of nature – passed, and once again a harsh winter returned to the Arka region. Following his father’s advice, Senkibai set out to winter the horses in the Syr region. News quickly spread that “the wealthy Orazgul’s large herd of horses is coming.” The man who had once given up his cloak for the debt of a former debt leader also heard this news. At that time, he had become a respected elder in a village where he had established a family. After hearing that “Senkibai’s people have come close to the village,” he deliberately sought out the horse herders, and after exchanging greetings, he asked Senkibai: – Is there anyone named Orazgul in your village besides your father? Senkibai replied that there was no one by that name besides his father. – In that case, this area you are heading to is my home. Let your horses graze freely in the vast pastures here during the winter. I will not ask for payment. Just meet me on your way back to your people in the spring, – the man firmly instructed Senkibai. The horses emerged from winter in good condition, and the mares began to foal. The elders welcomed him with open arms, hosting him and showing him honor and respect. While sitting together, enjoying food and conversation, he said: – We have long inhabited this region. Your father once did me an unforgettable kindness in times of hardship. I always wished that “fate would bring me together with that Orazgul.” Today, by God’s will, that wish has come true, and I have met you for the first time, – reminiscing about an event from a time of poverty. Then, feeling emotional for some reason, the elder called for his beautiful daughter and said: – There is a long-standing tradition in our country to give a daughter to a close friend. I am about to send my son with you. Take her to your father. Even if the respected Ozhan lies at the feet of your father, he will not be disgraced, – tears welled in his eyes. The next day, Senkibai sent his friend to fetch a herd of pure black horses with their tails and manes combed, presenting them to the elder as the “bridal gift.” Thus, he placed the girl on a four-legged white horse and set off towards his homeland. As recorded in historical chronicles, in 1726, when Batyr Bogembai was heading to the Battle of Alakol with ten thousand troops, he stopped by the banks of the Zharly River in Karakraly to rest his troops, dividing them into hundreds and thousands, conducting various combat drills. Hearing that Batyr Khojas’ village was in the summer pastures, he decided to visit to “greet his father’s friend and receive a blessing.” He was warmly welcomed and honored upon his arrival. The Khojas family set up several special yurts for Orazgul, the wealthy son, and showed great respect to Batyr Bogembai. Especially, Senkibai, the eldest son of Ozhan, displayed remarkable hospitality and resourcefulness in hosting the guest. Batyr Bogembai was immensely pleased with the cleverness of young Senkibai. This time, Khojas expressed his great hopes for Batyr Bogembai from his great-grandson Senkibai. Senkibai, raised under the guidance of his grandfather, practiced archery, spear fighting, and dueling from a young age. Thus, he grew up playing with horses. At the age of fifteen, he began to participate in the disputes and joys of the village, delivering judgments on contentious issues. Senkibai’s fairness and wisdom distinguished him from a young age, gaining the attention of the people. Before heading into battle, Batyr Bogembai, fascinated by Senkibai’s appearance and demeanor, took him along. At this time, Bogembai was forty-five years old, while Senkibai was seventeen. It was a time when invasions in the vast Kazakh steppe had not ceased. The Battle of Alakol in 1725, the battles on the shores of Shubartengiz in 1728, and the bloody conflicts in the southern regions of Lake Balkhash ended in victory for the Kazakh forces. Leading the large army gathered from the Middle Zhuz, Batyr Bogembai decisively defeated the Kalmyks on the banks of the Bulanti and Bolenti rivers. In this battle against the Dzungars in the Nura steppe, twenty-year-old Senkibai faced the nobleman Koren, who was leading ten thousand troops under the command of Amir Sana, the grandson of Kontayshi. Young Senkibai, riding his horse known as “Kokdauyl,” charged at him. Although nobleman Koren was of similar age, he was a large, dark giant, thick as a horse, with long hair like a forearm, and a stern expression that seemed to carry snow from his brow. He shouted: “Well, Kazakh hero, you will perish in vain; take the first strike!” As Senkibai spurred “Kokdauyl,” just as the horse’s flesh began to warm, he raised his spear in his left hand and the seven-fold white sword of his grandfather Khojas in his right hand, charging towards the enemy. The Kalmyk hero, feeling no fear, stood there nonchalantly, dismissing the threat. As Senkibai galloped forward, he aimed his oak-handled spear at nobleman Koren and swung the white sword at the enemy’s neck. With a powerful swing, the white sword severed the enemy hero’s neck, sending his head rolling to the ground. Encouraged by the victory, the Kazakh forces shouted “Akzholdap” and charged against the enemy. This time, Bogembai, Malaisary, and Koikeldi pursued the enemy towards the southeast. Thus, young hero Senkibai paved the way for this victory. Abilay Khan referred to young heroes like Senkibai as “my noble falcon.” The meaning of this is as follows: ...Late at night, Abilay had dozed off. He was startled awake by the fearful voice shouting, “Get up! Get up! The enemy has come!” He jumped up, leaped onto a horse that was standing in front of the door, and commanded: “Bayan Batyr, ride out against the enemy with your thousand, Senkibai, you arrange the camp safely with your troops. It is your duty to protect the camp,” and spurred his horse. It was a moonless dark night. The rain poured heavily, and the fearful voices echoed. It was impossible to estimate how many enemy troops had struck unexpectedly; chaos reigned everywhere. It was difficult to distinguish who was the enemy and who was one’s own. Although the thick reeds had slightly dried from the incessant rain, the surroundings were still marshy. The camels, covered and burdened, struggled to move. Senkibai’s troops pierced through about ten enemy soldiers they encountered, and began to carry out Abilay’s order to “move the camp to the west side of the river.” However, that area was marshy and open. The shouts of the numerous enemies pierced the ears. There was no way to find a path through the thick reeds. Senkibai was at a loss, unable to find a way to lead the camp out. Feeling completely cornered, he jumped off his horse, looked towards the Qibla, and raised his hands: “Yes, spirit, my Alash ancestor, my Qarkabat mother, be my helper! Saint Qyryq Shiltan, support me!” As he wiped his face, a soaring eagle appeared before his eyes. He shouted, “Yes, spirit!” jumped back on his horse, and led his troops into the thick reeds, saying, “Pull the camp this way!” The eagle’s call guided him. Somehow, after struggling through the night, dawn broke, and they emerged from a large area surrounded by thick reeds and impassable waters. Senkibai set off with his troops to find Abilay and Bayan. Their decisions from the previous day’s council of heroes proved successful, and they defeated the enemy unexpectedly, leaving them in disarray. Abilay expressed his gratitude for Senkibai’s successful relocation of the camp to a safe place. The people inside the camp expressed their appreciation for Senkibai’s cleverness and for having heard the eagle’s call guiding them through the darkness. Acknowledging this unexpected situation, Abilay said: “Yes, Senkibai, you have become the white falcon of Altai, flying through the dark night and heavy rain without getting lost in the thick reeds. From now on, let us call you ‘Aqiyq Suңqar’!” Thus, Senkibai became known as the noble falcon, a revered and blessed hero.
