Borambai Batyr
The extraordinary bravery of the warrior Boranbay is evident in the bloody battle that took place at the foot of the Dolankara mountain. In a one-on-one fight, he kills the enemy's chief warrior, turns back the approaching Zunghar army, and opens a path for the troops he leads. The enemy retreats in a panic. Boranbay, firmly holding the banner entrusted to him, advances with his brave men and drives the Zunghars away. Pleased with the warrior's bold actions and exceptional bravery, Commander Qabanbay gifts him a captured prize from the enemy – a beautiful girl named Karashash. Karashash is the daughter of the chief warrior Dolan Koren of the Kalmyks. She is both beautiful and intelligent, and she falls in love with Boranbay. The people and soldiers under Commander Qabanbay gather to celebrate the victory in the wide valley of Dolankara mountain, as well as the wedding of Boranbay and Karashash. From then on, the flatland where horse races, goat pulling, and the tradition of chasing girls took place is called "Toyqilgan," while the valley where oil was poured into the fire and the wedding was held is named "Mayly Shat." Karashash was especially honored and respected by the elder of the tribe above other women. This is because, alongside her stunning beauty, she possessed wisdom, intellect, respect, and exemplary behavior fitting for the elder. Among the people, there is a legend that has been preserved. Once, a group of people returning from a celebration in the Myrzas region turned to Boranbay's grave and dismounted to pray. After the prayer, as they were getting up to leave, one person said, "Only Karashash is lying next to our elder among the other women." Then Tleuberdi remarked, "What a disgrace that a Kalmyk is lying next to our holy elder! She must be removed." Others responded, "Come on, don’t say that. Karashash is the true beloved of our elder, she is our mother." As the travelers moved away from the corpse, Tleuberdi's horse suddenly got frightened, and he fell onto a rock, injuring his arm and rib, and barely made it back to the village. Tleuberdi later died from that injury. Boranbay was not only wise, intelligent, just, and far-sighted, but he was also cunning, agile, and a courageous warrior. One of his descendants, elder Zhakypbek Korypbaiuly, recounts: "Boranbay was a large, tall man. He was a skilled horseman, very agile and quick in movement, and an incredibly strong man who would not let the enemy rise after striking them once. He always spoke the truth and was generous to both friends and foes. In one battle against the Zunghars, the troops led by Boranbay achieved victory. They granted freedom to the captured women and children of the enemy. A warrior named Donke, who had fought many times without achieving victory, managed to escape in this battle. 'We must find him and punish him; otherwise, he will go back, gather troops, and launch another attack,' he said, and together with his warrior brother Narbota, they set out to search for him. As they were surveying the ravines of the Tarbagatai mountains, they found the Kalmyk warrior sleeping among the thick fir trees. He handed his horse to Narbota and approached the enemy warrior on foot, poking him with his spear to wake him up. They began to grapple. They tossed each other around. The enemy was a formidable foe, but Boranbay, quick on his feet, drew his dagger and struck him down. Seeing this struggle, Narbota exclaimed: – My dear, instead of getting into all this trouble, why didn’t you just stab that villain with your spear while he was sleeping? Boranbay replied: – Oh, my dear, a warrior needs to be noble. Even though he is an enemy, he is a famous warrior of his people; I woke him up so he wouldn’t die unawares."
