Satai Batyr
... During the attack of the Kazakh soldiers led by the Alban hero Hangeldi against the Kalmyks, the bravery of Satai was mentioned: "Last May, we fought fiercely with the Kalmyks; the enemy was numerous, and the strength of the many was sufficient. They were pushing us back. At one point, a man with a bright red horse came in, shouting 'Bakhtiyar! Bakhtiyar!' and broke through the thick crowd. From that moment, he split the Kalmyk group in two and scattered them. The overwhelming force was like curdled milk, shattered into pieces. Our soldiers achieved victory. At that time, the main commander of the Albans and Suans, Hangeldi, shouted three times, 'Who broke the line?' Then, one came forward saying, 'It was me,' and another came saying, 'It was me,' but the main commander did not show them any favor. After that, the commander stood up and said: – Citizens! Heroes! Is there any citizen left who has not come to me?" Then a huge Kazakh like a rock said: – Sir, only one hunter is left; all those who claimed to be strong have come, I know, – and looked at the commander. The commander, still frowning, said: – Quickly, bring that man to me, – and sent the young man off. He went to the mentioned hunter and said: – Young man, the main commander is calling for you, – to which he replied: – I have no business with the commander; if he has work with me, let him come himself. – The young man returned and told the commander what had happened. After hearing this story, the commander laughed heartily and came himself: – My hero, you have led us to victory; grant us a reward, – he said. – Sir, if you ask, why should we hesitate? – and offered one red cap and one brown cap to the commander. Inside these caps were two infants. Taking the cap and with a slightly cheerful tone, he said: – Why is the bride so careless? I knew you had broken the line by the unhemmed edge of your coat, – and gave one of the girls. While mounting a repair horse, he said: – Hero, our horse is not very strong; be content with what we have, – he said. Then Satai stood up and said: – Our ancestors, the Kazakhs, have a wise saying: 'If your teeth do not touch each other, it is a feast; if your knees do not touch the ground, it is a horse.' We will take the horse you gave us and consider it a thoroughbred, – he said. After this incident, the two heroes became as close as brothers, friends, and kin.
