The son of Asan Qaygy, Abat, and the daughter.
Aсан Қайғы had a single son named Abat. He was a contemporary of the son of Khan Zhanibek. After the Khan's death, his son became the Khan. Once he became the Khan, he set out to raid the neighboring lands, leading his troops himself. When they returned from raiding, they captured a beautiful young girl. The Khan's assembled army began to discuss: "We will test the new Khan's justice; to whom will the girl be given?" Sensing this, the Khan offered the girl a choice. The girl said: – If you give me a choice, return me to my people; I will not belong to anyone. The Khan, feeling insulted by this response, said: – Is there no one in this army worthy of you? I am the leader, and I will not let anyone pass in front of you, not even the horseman or the servant. I have no jealousy if you choose anyone, but if you do not choose anyone, I will take your head! I give you three days; if you do not comply, my decree will not change, – he said. After three days, he asked the girl: – What have you decided? – to which the girl replied: – The world is bright, life is sweet. The Khan's decree does not waver, The Khan does not lie, I am grateful, my lord, for your words If you give me the freedom to choose. I do not wish To be your servant. Let no one be overlooked Show them all to my eyes. If I burn in the fire, My own fate is my own, – she said. The Khan gathered the people and made them pass in front of the girl's tent. The girl did not mark anyone. The Khan remained silent for two or three days, moved the camp, and after a day at the river, he sent someone to the girl to ask, "Who do you like?" The girl replied: "A person in distress is pitiful to another in distress," – she said. The messenger returned without understanding the message. The Khan summoned the girl to where he was sitting. Upon hearing that the Khan had called her, she shed tears and went outside, where she saw a man sitting at the edge of the tent, cooking meat. When she noticed him, she wiped her tears and came to the Khan, bowing. The Khan asked the girl: – Did you see? – The girl replied: – I just saw him, my lord! – The Khan asked: – Who did you see? – The girl said: – I do not know who he is; if you lift the door, I will show you, – she replied. The Khan had the door opened and asked those standing outside, "Is it that one? Is it that one?" The girl said "no." The Khan asked: – Then who? Is it that servant cooking meat? – and she replied...(not in the original text). The Khan called the servant over and found that it was Abat, the son of Aсан Қайғы. After sending the girl back, the Khan asked Abat: – Why are you cooking meat? – Abat replied: – For the peace of my companions, – he said. The Khan asked: – Did you pass in front of the girl the other day? – Abat replied: – No, – he said. The Khan asked: – Why did you not pass? – Abat replied: – I thought I should not compete with the ambitious youth, and I did not want to go before a single woman without passing the scrutiny of the crowd, – he said. The Khan called the girl and asked: – What is the meaning of what you said? The girl replied: – When this young man was not visible, I could not find my heart's desire; I meant that whoever he is, let the Khan himself decide. The Khan paired Abat with the girl. When Aсан Қайғы was preparing to lead the people to a place called Jideli Baysyn, Abat was feeling reluctant to move. One day, Aсан Қайғы said to Abat: – I do not want to leave without seeing a foreign land with a different religion and language, without seeing a comfortable place taken by strangers, without seeing the place where the Khan's seat was taken, without seeing a place where a woman is equal to a man. My son, what are your thoughts? – Abat replied: – If such a horse exists, I would not mind seeing it, – and he went to the people preparing to move, finding a place for them. After the entire people settled, he began to say, "Let us move." As the day passed, Aсан Қайғы sensed that there were no people left to move. He said to his daughter-in-law: – My dear, the people are looking at our yurt; take down your tent, – he said. His daughter-in-law, not wanting to hurt her father-in-law's feelings, began to move. Many people moved with her. Most of the people stayed behind. Abat remained with the people who stayed. Aсан Қайғы mounted his swift horse and left the caravan behind. On the day the moving people settled at Balqash, Aсан Қайғы returned to the camp and asked his daughter-in-law: – Oh, my dear, what kind of place is this where you have settled, what kind of road have you traveled? – The daughter-in-law replied: – This settled place is called Balqash. It has plenty of fish; one day... it will be a place for people to dwell. This road we traveled is marked by bird tracks, a road for horses. It is the road my grandfather would take when he dismounted from his bed, – she said. Aсан Қайғы said: – My dear, then find your own paths! – and he sent his daughter-in-law back.
