Golden Fish
Once upon a time, in the city of Baghdad, there lived an old woman and an old man who were struggling with poverty. They had a single son who was eight years old. The old woman took care of the household, while the old man fished, catching a few fish to make a meager meal. One day, the boy said, "Father, let me learn to fish too. Please let me go today." Although the old man and woman were worried that their only child might drown, the boy cried and begged until they finally said, "If you want to go, go." The boy was overjoyed. The next morning, he went to check the net he had set the night before and found a golden fish caught in it. The boy was so happy that he didn't know what to do. He ran all the way home. When the old man and woman saw that their son had brought home a golden fish, they rushed to him in excitement, bumping into each other and falling down. The old man took the fish and ran to the king of the city. The palace guards tried to prevent him from entering. Finally, upon hearing that he had brought a golden fish as a gift for the king, the king himself allowed him to enter. When the king saw the fish, he asked the old man, "You have never caught a golden fish in your life; who caught this one?" The old man replied, "My little son caught it." "Then send that boy to me," the king ordered, sending the old man back home. When the boy arrived, the king gave him a lot of gold, and the boy returned home joyfully. Hearing this, the king's advisors became envious. They tempted the king, saying, "This golden fish should not be alone. You should find a mate for it for the boy." The king accepted the advisors' suggestion. He called the boy and ordered, "Find a mate for this fish." The boy returned home crying, having received a heavy burden on his shoulders. His parents were also very upset. The boy then set another net. When he checked it, he found another golden fish caught in it. He took the fish to the king again. The king was very pleased and gave him a lot of gold treasure, and he built a nice palace for the old man and woman. The old man's house, which had once been in ruins, now became a grand residence with spacious rooms and abundant wealth. Seeing this, the king's advisors grew even more resentful. They plotted to send the boy far away, to a place where he would never return. They went to the king and said, "Your Majesty, this is a wonderful thing. However, the golden fish cannot live alone; it must have its own golden water. You must obtain that." The naive king believed them. He summoned the boy and ordered him to find the golden water. "If you don't bring it back, I will have you hanged," the king said. The boy returned home, filled with anxiety. His father asked, "What did the king command?" The boy replied, "He told me to find the golden water," and he began to cry. When the old man and woman heard this, they lost their senses. One day, the boy argued with his parents and set off on a long journey to find the golden water. He crossed many forests and rivers, climbed high passes, and walked through desolate deserts. At one point, he encountered an old shepherd. He greeted the elder and shook his hand. The shepherd asked the boy where he was headed. The boy explained that he was from Baghdad and was searching for the golden water on the king's orders. The shepherd thought for a long time and then spoke. "There is such water, but reaching it and returning is not easy," he said. "From here, you will travel for forty days until you reach a great river, and you will need to take a boat to cross it. The distance from one side of the river to the other is very far. The boat returns only once a year. If the boat is on this side, you will cross quickly; if it is on the other side, you will have to wait a year. After that, you will continue your journey. You will see a stone fortress ahead; after you see it, you will travel for another ten days. It is said to be forty cubits high. A princess rules over it, and her people are all women. They say the water of the lake in this city has golden water," the elder said. The boy continued on his journey and, upon reaching the river the elder mentioned, saw a caravan ship just setting off. He jumped from the cliff onto the ship and landed perfectly. After several days of traveling across the sea, he finally reached the stone fortress of the princess. However, the fortress was so high that it was dangerous even to look at its top, let alone climb it. The boy was very distressed and cried out, but he couldn't just sit there. He kept walking around the fortress. Eventually, he found a tall tree that leaned against the fortress. The boy climbed up the tree and reached the top of the fortress. Inside the fortress was a whole city, shining with a wonderful light. "This must be the light of the golden water," the boy thought. Seeing this, he couldn't hold back and jumped into the fortress. After that, he lost consciousness. When he opened his eyes, he found himself inside a house. Looking around, he saw it was a beautiful house, but there was no one around. Suddenly, a young girl entered the house. The boy began to ask her questions. "Where am I?" he asked. "I brought you here from the fortress where you were in a miserable state; today is the third day. Now tell me about yourself!" the girl said. "I come from Baghdad, and I am searching for the golden water," the boy replied. "The water you seek is here. However, this place is very dangerous for you," the girl warned. "Here lives the realm of the human fairy. Our princess is named Khorlygayim. Her people are all women; there are no men at all. If a man is found here, he will be killed. To be honest, I am not from this realm. I must be from your 'Baghdad' city. The reason I say this is that I still remember the princess calling me 'Oh, Baghdad girl.' I must have been brought here when I was young. Therefore, stay hidden in this house. If they find you, they will eliminate both you and me." So the boy stayed hidden with the girl, one as a sister and the other as a brother. The "Baghdad girl" was the princess's cook, and she prepared various dishes from different fruits and sweet plants every day, but she didn't know how to add salt to the food. One day, the boy accidentally dropped a piece of salt from his pocket into the pot. After eating, Khorlygayim called for the cook and asked, "Who cooked today's meal?" The cook, having noticed that today's food was particularly delicious, replied, "Your Majesty, I must tell you the truth. Fifteen years ago, I became pregnant without anyone's involvement and gave birth to a girl. That girl is now fifteen years old, and she is the one who cooked today's meal." The king gathered his advisors and ordered, "Now gather all the people of the city and line them up by the golden lake." The cook also dressed the boy in girls' clothing and took him to the gathering. Once the people had gathered, they were immediately ordered to undress and enter the water. At that moment, it became clear that the boy was a male, and the king ordered one of his advisors to behead him. The advisor, upon seeing the boy's handsome face, fainted. Another advisor embraced his legs. Enraged, the king drew his sword and lunged at the boy, but he too fainted. Regaining his senses, Khorlygayim dismissed the crowd and ordered the boy to be brought to her palace. Once in the palace, the girl princess said to the boy, "I might have been angry with you, otherwise this situation would not have occurred. If you had not opposed me, I would have married you." "I have no objections," the boy replied, "but I have one request for you, if you accept it." "Speak!" said the girl princess. "When I left my homeland, I set out on the king's orders to find the golden water. I wish to present what I sought to my king. That is my request," the boy said. The princess accepted the boy's request and ordered her chief advisor, Sholak peri, "Bring the necessary amount of golden water and take this boy on your wings to the king of Baghdad." After bringing the boy to the palace of the king of Baghdad, Sholak peri said, "Enter your king and show him the pool where the golden fish swims, and when you need it, you can ignite this," and she plucked two strands of hair from her head. The boy entered the king's chamber and reported that he had fulfilled the order. "Look at the pool," he said. When the king looked, he saw the pool overflowing with golden water. Seeing this, the king showered the boy with countless gifts. When the boy returned home, his parents did not recognize him. The unfortunate couple, who had suffered greatly, could hardly believe it was their son. While they were celebrating the return of their son, the king's wicked advisors were plotting to eliminate him. They went to the king again and said, "Your Majesty, we sincerely wish for your status to rise even higher. You have the golden fish, and you also have the golden water that flows freely. Surely, Your Majesty, you have achieved this through your wisdom. On the other hand, you know that we have also been of assistance to you. We have another valuable piece of advice for you." "Tell me, I am always ready to listen to your valuable suggestions," said the king. "It is said that there are two golden birds in the world. If you could obtain them, your status would rise even higher," they tempted him. The foolish king believed them again. He summoned the boy and ordered him to find the two golden birds. This time, the boy returned home filled with anxiety. However, he decided to consult Khorlygayim. He ignited the two strands of hair from Sholak peri. In an instant, Sholak peri arrived and took the boy to the girl princess in the blink of an eye. The boy told the girl princess that he was tasked with finding the two golden birds. Khorlygayim assured him that she would find them herself. She sent Sholak peri to her brother, who was a king in another land, and said, "Your sister Khorlygayim is about to marry, and she invites you to the wedding and asks you to bring the two golden birds to scatter." The brother came to the wedding with the two golden birds. Thus, after thirty days of festivities and forty days of celebrations for Khorlygayim, the boy returned to his homeland riding on Sholak peri's wings with the two golden birds. After presenting the two golden birds to the king, the king was pleased and gave the boy his place on the throne. Thus, the son of the old man and woman ruled over two kingdoms and married Khorlygayim, achieving all his desires. The Baghdad girl who had been the cook for Khorlygayim was actually the boy's biological sister, the first daughter of the old man and woman. She had been taken away when she was five years old. She too rejoiced at seeing her parents again.
