The Golden Bird and the Gray Wolf
Once upon a time, there was a king. This king had three sons and a very large garden. Such a garden was worthy of praise. There had never been such a garden in the world at that time. If a sorrowful or sick person entered this garden, the sorrow of the sorrowful would disappear, and the sick person would come out healthy. This garden contained various kinds of fruits from around the world. Among the fruit trees in the king's garden, he loved a tall apple tree with all his heart. One of the apples that grew on that tree would turn to gold, another to silver, meaning it would change colors. One day, a golden bird came to this garden. The feathers of the golden bird sparkled like gold, and its eyes sparkled like diamonds. Every night, this bird would fly into the king's garden and perch there. Every night, it would peck one apple from the king's beloved apple tree and take another one away. One day, the king went out to the garden. When he looked at the apple tree, he saw that the beautiful golden apples were very few. The king was upset and began to grieve. One day, he called his three sons and said, "Oh, my dear sons, which of you can catch the golden bird that comes to the garden alive? Whoever catches it, I will give half of my kingdom during my lifetime and leave my entire kingdom as a testament at the time of my death," he said. After hearing this from their father, the sons replied, "Do not worry, we will catch it no matter what." They began to take turns guarding the garden. First, the eldest son went to the garden and stood guard at night. He sat under the apple tree. The king's son fell asleep. At that moment, the golden bird came, pecked the apples, and took one away. The king's son woke up. He saw that the apples had been pecked. One apple was missing the next morning. The king called for his eldest son and asked, "Oh, my beloved son, did you see the bird?" The son replied, "Oh, dear father, I did not see it." The next day, the second son went to guard. He sat under the apple tree and soon fell asleep again. At that moment, the bird came, pecked the apples, and took one away. The next morning, the king called for his son, and he answered just like the eldest son. When it was the turn of the youngest son, he went to the garden and did not sleep under the apple tree. After a while, the garden lit up like fire, and the apple tree glowed. The king's son tried to catch the bird by grabbing its tail. However, he could not catch it. The golden bird flew away in a flurry. After a while, the bird returned, lighting up the garden like daytime, and began to peck the apples again. The king's son tried to catch it by its tail again, but he could not hold it properly, and the golden bird flew away again. The prince was left with one feather in his hand. The king called for his son, and the son brought the feather to his father. The king was astonished and very happy. Because that feather had turned the dark night into day. The king placed this feather in the house where he sat, saying, "This feather must not be lost." After this, the golden bird never came to the garden again. After a long time, the king called his sons and said, "Oh, my beloved sons, no matter what, if you bring that golden bird alive, I will fulfill my previous promise." At that moment, the eldest son and the middle son became very angry with their younger brother and decided to search together. After that, the eldest son and the middle son asked their grandfather for permission and, after receiving his blessing, set out to search for the golden bird. After the brothers left, the king's youngest son began to plead with his grandfather, "Oh, grandfather, let me go search too." The grandfather said, "My dear son, you are still young, you have not traveled a long way, and your brothers may not have reached the destination yet." Day by day, hour by hour, the youngest son kept asking his grandfather, "Please give me your blessing and let me go." Finally, the king could not refuse his youngest son. The grandfather prayed a lot and blessed the youngest son, who mounted a horse and set off on his journey. As he traveled, he did not even know where he was going. As he went, he began to think, "Is it far, is it near, is it high, or is it low?" After traveling for a while, he reached a place. It was a beautiful meadow with green grass and flowing springs. The next day, after walking a little further, he encountered a barren desert. After resting for a while, he left the barren desert. After walking a bit more, he saw a tall tree. There was an inscription on the tree. He read the inscription. The words written on the tree were: "There are three paths next to this tree: to the right, to the left, and straight ahead. If you go straight, you will be left hungry and naked but will remain safe. If you take the right path, your horse will die, but you will remain safe. If you go to the left, you will die, and your horse will remain." The king's son was very bored and, trusting in God, chose the right path. The king's son thought, "If my horse dies, I can still find wealth," and he walked for one day, then two days. On the third day, a gray wolf came to him from one side. The gray wolf spoke and said, "Oh, young man, you are a saint. You have seen the inscription on the tree. It says that if you go to the right, your horse will be lost," and at that moment, "the king has many horses," and the wolf began to take this boy's horse away. After losing his horse, the king's son felt as if he had lost his family and went to the side to cry. After a while, he started walking again. After one day and one night, the boy became completely exhausted. He sat down to rest. At that moment, the gray wolf came running from behind and caught up with him, saying, "I was jealous of the king's son and ate your horse." The gray wolf began to ask the boy, "Oh, king's son, what are you doing, tell me your business?" The king's son told the gray wolf everything. The gray wolf said, "Get on my back." The boy got on, and the wolf ran away. The speed was such that even a fast horse could not catch up with the wolf. As they went, it became evening. When evening came, they reached a stone road. This stone road was impossibly high. The gray wolf said, "The time has come, get off my back. Climb this stone road. After you descend from this road, you will see a garden. In that garden, there is a golden bird in a golden cage. You can take it, but do not touch the cage. If you touch the cage, you will die. Because at that moment, the guards will be alerted, and you will not be able to escape from that garden. They will catch you at that hour," he said. The king's son climbed the stone road and entered the garden and saw the golden bird. When he began to take it out of the cage, the king's son had a thought. He said to himself, "It would be difficult to carry the bird without the golden cage." He went back to take the golden cage off, but as soon as he started to untie the cage, the inside of the garden filled with noise. At the place where the cage was tied, a metal rod had entered the king's house. At the very top, there was a large bell. With the ringing sound of that bell, the guards came and captured this young man. The owner of the golden bird was a king named Almatkhan. King Almat was a very angry person. He was very angry with the king's son and said, "Is it not shameful for you to do such a thing? What kind of person are you? Which king's land are you from, what is your name?" The young man, frightened, said, "I am the son of King Hikmet. My name is Farmuch." Almat asked the young man, "Why did you come here?" The young man replied, "A golden bird has taken over our king's garden. Every night it comes and takes an apple from our apple tree. My father sent me to catch it." King Almat said, "Oh, young man, as a king's son, you should not have done this." The young man said, "If I catch this golden bird, my father will make me king in his place. That is why I came." Almat said, "If you had asked nicely, I would have given it to you without saying a word. But if you want to do this, I will write several letters of complaint and distribute them everywhere. Just considering your youth, I will spare you and give you a lot of wealth if you do me a service. That service is to find a golden-maned horse in the kingdom of the third king, which is a thousand kilometers from this city, behind a large high sea. If you bring me that golden-maned horse, I will give you the golden bird with all my heart. If you do not do this service, I will spread your name throughout the world," he said. The young man bowed to King Almat and set out to find the horse. The wolf came to the young man, and he told the gray wolf everything that had happened to him. The wolf said, "Oh, young man, why did you not listen to what I said? Why did you take the golden cage?" The king's son replied, "I am guilty before you." The wolf said, "Well, it must be God's will. Now get on my back, and I will take you wherever you want." The king's son got on the gray wolf's back. The gray wolf ran like an arrow. After a while, they reached the kingdom that the king had mentioned at night. In the middle of the night, they arrived at a barn made of white stone. The wolf said to the young man, "Go, quickly enter this barn, and when the guards are asleep, take the horse, that is, the golden-maned horse. But there may be a golden bridle on the wall; do not touch it, for if you do, you will die." The king's son entered the barn. He took the horse. At that moment, the young man's eyes fell on the golden bridle on the wall, and he was very interested in it. When he tried to take it, the barn became noisy, and the guards woke up, entered the barn, and brought the king's son before the king. The king began to ask the young man, "Which land are you from, and whose son are you?" The king's son told everything about who he was. The king said to the young man, "Is it appropriate for you to do such a thing, being a king's son? Well, I will forgive you for this sin if you do me a service. The service is that there is a king in that kingdom who has a beautiful daughter. For many years, I have sent messengers to him, asking him to give me his daughter because I have fallen in love with her, but he has not given her to me. If you bring that girl to me, I will forgive all your sins. If you do not bring her, I will write letters of complaint about your misdeeds and distribute them everywhere, and everyone will know your shame and mock you. If you fulfill this task, I will give you the golden-maned horse and the golden bridle willingly. If you had asked nicely from the beginning, I would have given it to you without saying a word," he said. The king's son thought for a long time and then promised to bring the girl. He went to the gray wolf and cried, asking for help. The wolf said, "Why did you not listen to what I said? Why did you touch the golden bridle?" The young man replied, "It is my fault; God led me this way." The wolf said, "Alright, what has happened has happened. Now, get on my back, and I will take you wherever you want." The wolf ran very fast, leaving no time to speak. After a while, the girl reached her father's land. Her city was surrounded by a golden fence, and there was a garden inside. The gray wolf said to the young man, "Get off my back and trust in God. Wait for me at the oak tree on the road we came from." The king's son went as the wolf said and waited at the oak tree. The gray wolf went to the golden fence and hid. The king's daughter came out to the garden. After sunset, she walked with her maidens, and as she walked, she came close to the gray wolf. At that moment, the gray wolf jumped off the fence, picked up the king's daughter, and leaped away with her on its back. Running very fast, they soon reached the oak tree the wolf had mentioned. The king's son also got on the wolf's back. They continued on their way. Now, let us return to the garden where the king's daughter was. After the wolf took the king's daughter away, the maidens went to the king and told him. When the king heard this, he mounted a swift horse and set out to chase the wolf. But the wolf could not be caught. Now let us return to the gray wolf, the king's daughter, and the king's son. Here, the young man fell in love with the girl, and the girl fell in love with him. They approached the king, who had ordered them to bring the girl. The young man began to grieve and did not want to give the girl to the king, and tears began to roll down his cheeks. Seeing the young man in such a state, the gray wolf asked, "Why are you grieving?" The young man replied, "Oh, my dear friend, gray wolf, how can I not cry? I have fallen in love with this king's daughter with my body, soul, and blood. I cannot bear to be apart from her for even a moment. If I tell the king, he will not give her to me. I have no other way; if I do not bring her for the golden-maned horse, my name will spread everywhere without honor. I am truly grieving for these reasons, my wolf friend," he replied. The gray wolf said, "Oh, young man, I have served you a lot, and if that is the case, let me serve you one more time. I will become that girl right now. Take me to the king and get the golden-maned horse, and then leave. After a while, I will ask the king for permission to go outside. He will send me with his maidens, and at that time, I will be with you," he said. After saying these words, the gray wolf transformed into the king's daughter in the blink of an eye. There was no way to tell the difference. The young man first told the girl to wait in a certain place and led the wolf in the form of a girl to the king. When the king saw her, he was overjoyed and did not know what to do. He happily took the wolf disguised as a girl and gave the golden-maned horse to the young man. The young man was very happy, mounted the golden-maned horse, and went to the girl he loved, making her ride with him. The king's daughter, in the form of the gray wolf, stayed with the king for one day, three days. On the fourth day, the gray wolf asked the king for permission to go outside. The king said, "Why should I not let you go? My dear, may my soul be sacrificed for you," and he granted permission for her to go outside with his maidens. The young man and the real king's daughter forgot about the gray wolf. At that moment, the young man remembered his dear friend, the gray wolf. When he thought, "Where is my dear friend, the gray wolf?" they suddenly saw the gray wolf. The gray wolf came, greeted them, asked about their well-being, and the young man and the girl got on the gray wolf. They took the golden-maned horse with them. Just as they were about to reach the king who had ordered them to bring the golden-maned horse, they stopped somewhere. The young man pleaded with the gray wolf, "My gray wolf, you have served me a lot, thank you, may God be pleased with you. Now, if you could do me one more favor, I would not ask for any more services. I have truly become attached to this golden-maned horse and do not want to part with it," he said. The gray wolf replied, "Alright," and rolled on the ground, becoming the golden-maned horse. The young man left the beautiful girl and the golden-maned horse behind and mounted the gray wolf, entering the king's presence. When the king saw them, he was very happy and extremely delighted. He came out to greet them, kissed the young man's hand, and took them into his grand palace. In honor of the young man, he held a splendid feast. They treated him very well. There were various dishes and wines, and after a while, the young man reminded the king that it was time for him to return to his homeland. The king agreed and happily sent him off with the golden bird and the golden cage. The young man left the city with these and went to his beautiful girl. They both mounted the golden-maned horse and took the golden bird and the golden cage with them. One day later, the king prepared to go hunting with his false golden-maned horse, saddling it with his servants. The king mounted and set off. As the king began to ride the golden-maned horse, it became angry and turned into the gray wolf. The wolf threw the king off and ran away. The gray wolf, while running, caught up with the young man and the real king's daughter, who had mounted the true golden-maned horse. Thus, they continued their journey until they reached the place where the gray wolf had eaten the young man's horse. The gray wolf said, "I have served you sincerely. I brought you to the place where I ate your horse. Now get off my back. Mount your golden-maned horse and go wherever you wish. Farewell," he said. The king's son cried as he parted from the gray wolf. They continued on their way, becoming very tired. The day was very hot. Just before reaching their city, they lay down to rest under a tree by the forest. They tied the golden-maned horse to that tree and placed the golden bird in its cage at their heads, lying on soft grass. As they talked, they fell asleep. At that time, the young man's two brothers were returning empty-handed from their search for the golden bird. When they reached the place where their brother was lying, they saw the golden bird and the golden cage and became very interested. One of the brothers drew his dagger from its sheath and stabbed his brother to kill him. The king's daughter woke up and began to ask, "What is your name, where are you from, which king's land, which city?" She asked him his name and where he was from. The king's daughter began to cry very hard when she saw that the young man she loved had been stabbed. She said, "I am the daughter of the king you mentioned. Your brother brought me here. Which of you killed him while he was asleep? This is not bravery. If you had killed him while he was awake, it would have been a different matter." The two brothers did not care for the girl's words. They took the golden-maned horse, the golden bird, and the girl back to their city. They held a grand feast and planned to marry the king's daughter to the elder son. The girl said, "I have a complaint; after I tell it, then marry me," she said. The king asked, "What is your complaint? Speak." The girl recounted everything she had seen. The king, unsure whether to believe her or not, immediately sent someone to check on his younger son. When they arrived, they found a gray wolf licking the wounds of the king's son and reviving him. The visitors cried as they reunited. They said goodbye to the wolf. Some went to congratulate the king. When they returned to the city, the king met with his son, and he made his two brothers slaves. The king married his beloved daughter to this son and held a celebration for thirty days and a feast for forty days, appointing him as king in his place.
