Golden Topai (knucklebone)
Once upon a time, there was a rich man. He had only one son. One day, when the rich man went to the lake to water his horses, he saw a bright red raw liver floating in the water. The horses he had driven were frightened by the liver floating in the lake and refused to go into the water. Despite the rich man trying to drive his horses to the well, he could not get them to enter the water. At that moment, the rich man took his rod and poked the liver floating in the water, and the liver sank. After a while, it emerged from the water as an old witch and grabbed the rich man by the collar. The rich man’s eyes widened in fear. He pleaded with the witch, saying, “I will give you gold as heavy as a horse’s head, let me go.” The witch did not let him go. “I will give you all these horses, let me go,” he said. The witch still did not let him go. In the end, the rich man realized he could not escape from the witch no matter what he offered. When he asked, “What should I give you now?” the witch replied, “Give me your only son, then I will let you go.” Life is precious. The rich man was about to give up his only son. So the witch released the rich man. The witch asked, “Where will you give your son?” The rich man replied, “Tomorrow I will move to the summer pasture, and I will leave my son’s golden saddle in the winter pasture; you will sit next to that saddle in the winter pasture,” he said. Thus, the rich man made a promise to the witch and drove his horses away. The next day, the rich man moved from his winter pasture to the summer pasture. He forgot to take his son’s golden saddle and left it in the winter pasture. The entire village was moving to the summer pasture. At one point, the rich man’s only son missed his golden saddle. The father then said, “Oh dear, I forgot it in the winter pasture while hurrying to move. Go and get it.” The boy wanted to ride his pony and asked his father, “Well, which pony should I ride?” The rich man replied, “Go to the horses and make some noise with your bridle; whichever horse looks at you, ride that one.” The boy went to the horses and made noise with his bridle, and among all the horses, only one scabby pony looked at him. The boy caught that scabby pony, bridled it, and headed towards the winter pasture. After a while, the boy arrived at the winter pasture. When he got there, he saw an old witch sitting next to the saddle. The boy said to the witch, “Mother, please give me that saddle over there.” The witch replied, “My dear, you take it yourself; I can’t stand up while sitting, and I can’t sit down while standing.” The boy said, “If I get off, I can’t take it; if I ride, I can’t get off.” They stood like this for a while, and then suddenly the boy dashed forward on the pony and snatched the golden saddle from atop the pony. The old witch immediately chased after him. The boy ran away, and the witch pursued him. At one point, the witch pulled out one of her teeth and threw it, causing one of the pony's legs to fall off. The pony continued to run on three legs. When the witch pulled out another tooth and threw it, another leg fell off. The pony ran on two legs. When the witch pulled out a third tooth and threw it, the third leg fell off. The pony ran on one leg. The witch then pulled out another leg with another tooth. At that moment, a tall tree appeared in their path. The pony spoke to the boy, saying, “Quickly climb to the top of this tree; I will roll away.” As instructed, the boy jumped off the pony and climbed to the top of the tree. The pony rolled away. Meanwhile, the witch pulled out a tooth and began digging at the base of the tree. She dug until evening. At one point, a red fox came and said to the witch, “Mother, you must be tired; let me dig while you take a nap.” The witch handed her hoe to the fox and fell asleep. The fox threw the hoe into the water and ran away. When the witch woke up, both the hoe and the fox were gone. The witch pulled out another tooth and continued digging at the base of the tree. Then, another fox came and said, “Mother, give me your hoe; you must be tired, let me dig.” The old witch replied, “You will take my hoe and run away again.” The fox said, “That’s the red fox from the hill; I am the white fox from the valley. Long ago, this boy’s father almost caught me while I was hunting. Therefore, I have a grudge against this boy.” The old witch, believing the fox’s words, gave her hoe to the fox again and fell asleep. The fox threw the hoe into the water and ran away. When the witch woke up, both the hoe and the fox were gone. “Oh no, I have been deceived,” she said, pulling out another tooth and continuing to dig at the base of the tree. When the witch opened her mouth, only one tooth remained. As she continued digging, she was getting closer to toppling the tree. At one moment, a flock of crows flew over the boy’s head. The boy called out to the crows, “Oh, crows, help me with your wings! Go tell the five dogs in the summer pasture to come and rescue me from the old witch.” The crows cawed and flew away. Then a flock of ducks flew over. He called out to them too, but they flew away without responding. Then a swallow flew back and forth above the tree and landed on the boy’s head. The boy, crying, entrusted his message to the swallow. Previously, the swallow had built a nest in the winter pasture and had raised its young without harming them. That’s why they were friends. So the swallow went to deliver the boy’s message to the dogs. “There is a boy standing at the top of a tree in a certain place. The old witch has dug at the base and is about to topple it,” it said. The swallow told the dogs. Upon hearing this, the dogs immediately rushed to the tree. As soon as the dogs arrived, the tree fell to the ground. The dogs seized the old witch, tearing her apart and killing her. The boy rode the dogs one by one and safely returned to his village. His parents were overjoyed that their son had returned safely from the witch, gathering the villagers for a grand feast. After several days, the old witch’s daughter came to the fallen tree. When she arrived, she found her mother dead, her fur all gone. To find out who had killed her, she looked around and saw the footprints of dogs. Following the dog tracks, she came across many horses. Realizing she was close to the village, she continued on. The dog tracks led directly to the rich man’s village. At that moment, the five dogs, having learned of the old witch’s arrival, rushed towards the witch’s daughter. The girl was very strong, unlike her mother, and did not yield to the five dogs. At that moment, the boy shot an arrow and struck one of the girl’s eyes. When he shot again, he killed her. Thus, the boy escaped safely from the old witch and grew up to become a strong hero.
