Begim ber (Version I)
In the people's sayings, there is a phrase: "Jankent has collapsed seven times and risen seven times." This is related to the queen Begim-ana of Khan Shanshar. One day, while Khan Shanshar was the ruler of Jankent, he went out with his retinue for a stroll and hunting. When they had traveled a bit far from the city, the Khan remembered that the bow he used for shooting arrows had been left behind in the palace. Whether the Khan regretted it or not, he sent one of his retinue, whom he saw, saying, "Go, bring it quickly." When the retainer rushed directly to the Khan's palace, the people inside were startled by his swift pace, some suspicious. Begim-ana also came outside. The retainer, astonished by the queen's extraordinary beauty, fell off his horse, losing consciousness. It took some time for him to regain his senses. After that, he explained the situation, took the bow, and arrived late to the Khan. When Khan Shanshar asked the retainer why he was late, he told the whole story without hiding anything. At that moment, the Khan became furious and turned the horse around. He threw the retainer into a seven-layer dungeon. Expressing distrust towards Begim-ana, he cut off her right hand and braid. At that time, it is said that Begim-ana's father, a holy man, was still alive. This news reached him, and he immediately came to Jankent. The holy elder said to Khan Shanshar: "O Khan Shanshar, may the truth bring harm to one of us. I have come to know that truth. If my daughter has sinned, then it is just. But if she is innocent, let her hand and hair return to their place by tomorrow, and you shall bear the consequences!" After saying this, he turned and left. The holy man's harsh condition frightened the entire city. The next day, when the terrified people came to Begim-ana's palace, she stood there with her white arm shining and her long hair flowing. Meanwhile, the innocent retainer had somehow emerged from the seven-layer dungeon. That year, as autumn arrived, an unexpected calamity befell the city of Jankent, with poisonous snakes swarming, forcing the people to flee in panic. This event was later transformed into a song by an artist, leaving it as a legacy for future generations. Begim-ana was a historical figure. Near the lower reaches of the Syr Darya, on the bottom of the Aral Sea, the Begim-ana tower/tomb still stands today. According to researchers, the tower was built in the 9th-11th centuries. This period corresponds to the time of the Seljuk state, which was established by the Turkic-Oghuz tribes. After the son of Tukhak, who ruled the Kynyk tribe of the Turkic-Oghuz, came to power in the Seljuk state, he embraced Islam. This caused significant resistance from the tribes that lived along the Syr Darya, who were adherents of Tengriism and moved from winter to summer pastures. The Seljuks' departure from the city of Jent in 985 and their migration to the Nurata mountains reveals the historical truth underlying the legend of Begim-ana. The Seljuk himself died in this city of Jent. During the reign of Sultan Sanjar (1118-1157), a tribe known as the Kayi from the Kipchak-Qimak alliance destroyed Jent and restored the Tengriist spirit in the Syr Darya region. Now, consider the harmony between legend and reality; the Khan Shanshar in the legend corresponds to the historical Sultan Sanjar. The horde of snakes that swarm Jankent in the legend represents the Kayi tribe. This is because the word "kayi" means "snake" in the Mongolian language. Additionally, it is worth noting that one branch of the Tabyn tribe, which is part of the Jetyru tribal union of the Lesser Zhuz, is also called Begim.
