Lame Goose (Version I)
When spring arrives, Mother Earth’s stone breast melts, and when her milk breast is filled, the migratory birds come flocking in, filling the steppe with joy. The countless birds, eager to reach the cool lake and the green pastures, soon build their nests and lay eggs. They raise their offspring and experience joy in the gentle hands of nature. With this habit, every year, there are two brown geese that come and go, following the thick procession of birds. Of course, one is the father goose, and the other is the mother goose. The lake, which is a mirror where the two geese, well aware of their journey, long to spread their wings, must be a sight to behold. They feast on the green grass of that lake, lay their bellies on the cool ground, and stretch their wings in the gentle breeze, enjoying themselves. Especially when the fluffy white chicks stumble about, gathering in a flurry, and frolicking behind them, the two geese are filled with joy, and they raise their deep voices in a life song. At such times, the beautiful sound of the two geese echoes through the valleys, making the world listen as if it were alive. The wind calms, the lake’s surface shines like a mirror, and the flowers seem to hush, as if lulled into a slumber by the beautiful voices of the geese. One day, the joyful state and life song of the two brown geese reach the ears of a wandering gray hunter. The seasoned hunter, following the valley and the lakeshore, hiding among the reeds, takes aim at the unsuspecting geese. The arrow, shot without hesitation, swiftly strikes the mother goose, severing her leg. The sharp cry that escapes her startles the tranquil lake, causing all wings to flutter and rise into the sky. The white-feathered chicks, frightened, hide under their wounded mother. In a desperate attempt to save her chicks, the wounded goose flaps her wings, struggles with one leg, and moves towards the water. With her blood trailing behind, she leads her chicks to the island in the middle of the lake. The gray hunter, stunned and regretful, remains on the shore. The life of the brown goose, now alone and half a being, becomes filled with sorrow. There are no more days of returning with her chicks, as before. She spends the most interesting days of summer lying still. As she nears starvation, she begins to graze on the grass within reach. Without swimming or flapping in the wind, her feathers become disheveled, and her plumage starts to fall apart. But that is not all. With each passing day, her chicks grow into dark-winged birds, their legs stretching, and their necks elongating, they begin to graze far away with the father goose. The brown goose, crawling on the ground, tries to follow her chicks. But she is powerless. In such moments, her heart is filled with sorrow, and she cries out, lamenting the lake's expanse. The mournful voice of the mother goose fills the surroundings with grief, and the lake seems to shudder with worry. Thus, the days pass by. The lake’s water cools, and autumn arrives. The birds align and gather to prepare for their journey south. At this time, the mother goose’s chicks also join the great commotion, flying around as if to say goodbye to their mother. Then, the mother goose, flapping her wings and limping forward, cannot lift her belly and gets separated from her flock. She does not remain calm; unable to suppress her sobs, she cries out, pouring out her sorrow. The condition of the limping goose has turned into a lament.
