Tepeńkök (Version I)
Tepenkok was originally a slow horse belonging to a wealthy man. It is said that Tepenkok was named for its slowness, as it would not run even if a thousand were set upon it.
One day, a renowned critic notices Tepenkok, which is under the rider. The critic circles around Tepenkok, looking at it intently, and says, "Oh my, I thought there were few good horses in this era, but perhaps my eyes have deceived me. This creature seems ready to win a race if you spur it on!"
Hearing this, the shepherd laughs and says, "Well, what race can Tepenkok, which can't even catch up to sheep, possibly win!"
The critic immediately heads to the wealthy man's house. In the course of conversation, the critic asks the wealthy man, "How could you waste a rare thoroughbred that is born once in forty years by putting it to sheep?"
The wealthy man takes this to heart and, thinking the critic is mocking him, replies, "If a true thoroughbred is indeed born once in forty years, then I have wealth that will not diminish in those forty years. If you want to see a faster horse than me, come back in forty years!" and shows a stern face. The critic then says, "Dear sir, please do not take this to heart; I am speaking the truth. If my eyes do not deceive me, the Tepenkok under the shepherd is indeed a horse that would not be outpaced by any thoroughbred. You just do not know how to handle it. Tepenkok will not run unless it is spurred on, and it will not gallop unless it is excited. Therefore, when entering a race, you need to fill two bags with sand. After running back and forth, sweat will appear under its ears. Once the sweat appears, Tepenkok should stretch out and run. At that moment, you should cut the bottom of the bags with a sharp knife and pour out the sand, then raise the spirit and shout, and Tepenkok would fly like an arrow!"
The wealthy man listens to the critic's words and enters Tepenkok into the race. He does not just add it casually; he fills a large bag with sand as instructed. As predicted, that day Tepenkok left even the swiftest horses in the dust and came in first place. After this, Tepenkok, having found its rhythm, became unbeatable in races, they say.
This melody is said to represent the gallop of Tepenkok and the shouts of the child on horseback.
