The Graceful Girl (Version III)
Once upon a time, there was a single daughter who grew up among the three sons of a wealthy man. It is said that the girl had a congenital limp in one of her legs. However, raised in the abundance of her father's wealth and supported by her three brothers, she held her head high. In fact, to hide her limp, her proud demeanor led those around her to call her the "proud girl."
In her youth, the proud girl rejected many suitors, claiming they were "not her equal." As time passed, she lost track of how long she had been living this way. The life of a girl is as fleeting as a tulip; when most of her peers had already married and established their own homes, the wealthy man's daughter began to be referred to as an old maid still sitting on the shelf.
Several more years went by. One day, a young man came to this village. While discussing the local area, he learned that the wealthy man's proud daughter had still not been married off. It turned out that this young man had once been infatuated with the proud girl and had proposed to her. At that time, the wealthy man's daughter, who walked with her head held high, had dismissed him as "not her equal" and had sent him away.
Upon hearing that the girl was still unmarried, the young man reflected: "Oh my, she was once the one who captured my youthful feelings and kept me awake at night. But she looked down on my modest wealth and rejected me. Has she now realized that true happiness does not lie in wealth?" He pondered this deeply and decided to express his feelings through music. After refining the beginning and end of his composition, he approached a talented musician in the village and said, "You must convey this melody to the proud girl without fail. If she asks about the meaning, you will tell her honestly."
The reliable musician soon went to the proud girl's presence and played the greeting melody. The tune began with a carefree, joyful sound, like a young foal frolicking, and in the next section, the two strings harmonized, shifting into a melody that reflected the joys and sorrows of life. As the musician's hands moved from the wrist to the waist, a sense of regret seemed to grip him, as if a sorrowful sigh was caught in his throat...
At that moment, the proud girl signaled as if to say "enough, stop," and interrupted the melody. She inquired who had sent the greeting. After learning the answer, her expression changed, and she began to weep, her tears flowing freely. After a while, she composed herself and straightened her posture, saying, "What can I do? It is the fate written for me; in my pride, I failed to notice a true gentleman who would appreciate me, and I could not value him," she expressed her regret.
Later, this melody spread throughout the land under the name "Proud Girl."
