Two Wives (Version I)
A wealthy man has twin sons whom he raises with great care. According to the wishes of the parents, both twin boys grow up to be admirable young men, well-regarded by the community. In every endeavor, they are inseparable, supporting each other and complementing one another, bringing joy to those who see them. One day, the wealthy man thinks, "Since God created their umbilical cords as one, it would not be wrong for me to propose to a family that has twin daughters." With this thought, he begins to seek out a household with twin daughters. In a village, various stories are bound to arise; if one household has twin boys, why wouldn't the next have twin girls? Before long, a household with twin daughters becomes known, and the wealthy man eagerly moves to propose. Both sides express their goodwill, sharing meals and exchanging vows, becoming in-laws. When the agreed-upon time arrives, the two brides joyfully step over the threshold and enter their new homes. With one head becoming two and two heads becoming four, the wealthy man, whose wishes have been fulfilled, does not hold back, announcing the celebration far and wide and throwing a grand feast. However, as everything is unfolding beautifully, a messenger arrives galloping in. He reports that a horde of ruthless enemies has invaded the outskirts of the village. At that moment, the twin brothers, who were enjoying the festivities in their new home, immediately mount their horses without hesitation. They prepare themselves firmly and, to prevent the merciless enemy, rally their relatives and lead the charge. Meanwhile, the two brides, who had just been singing joyful songs, turn their melodies into sorrowful laments, praying to God. They wish for the safe return of their beloved husbands and for the enemy to retreat, restoring peace to their land. The heartfelt lament of the two brides, which touched the hearts of all who heard it, was later captured by a talented musician on the dombra. It spread widely under the name "The Two Brides." "The Two Brides" is one of the few pieces played with a double tuning. When the lower and upper strings of the dombra are tuned to the same note, it truly evokes the shared hopes and sorrows of the twin brides.
