The Lame Horse (Version I)
Hearing the news that "a herd of wild horses is lying in the place called Sarualy," Jochi Khan's only son set out with his sharpshooters. After seeing the wild horses, the Khan's son donned a red cloak, armed himself, and decided to confront the herd of wild horses alone, stopping the others. The other gray sharpshooters scattered into the ravines to hunt. At that moment, a lone wild horse charged from the herd, darting around the Khan's son as if it were teasing him. A dark fog enveloped the earth. The sharpshooters became disoriented. While they were wandering, a powerful commanding voice shouted, "Run from the gray sharpshooters, step over the red cloak!" After this commanding voice, the dark night instantly lifted, and the earth became bright. When the sharpshooters looked around, the wild horse that had been frolicking was gone, and so was the Khan's son who had confronted it. What the sharpshooters found was just the Khan's son's little pinky. Taking that pinky, they returned to their village.
The Khan, enraged by the absence of his son, proclaimed a decree to the people:
– My son must return safe and sound! Let me not hear any bad news about my son. Whoever brings news of his death, I will pour lead down their throat. Until I hear any news of my son, let the food supply be halted, – he declared, and lay down in despair. No one dared to go before the Khan as a messenger. Thus, while the people were in deep sorrow and distress, a musician named Kerbuka stepped forward:
– I will announce the death of the son with my dombra, – he said, drawing the attention of the entire crowd. He came to the Khan's threshold, knelt down, and began to play a tune. This tune depicted the wild horse's movement and the moment of its challenge. He played a second tune. In this tune, it was clearly stated that the Khan's son had died. Upon understanding this, the Khan raised his head:
– Your tune says, "Your son is dead, Jochi Khan," – he spoke. Then Kerbuka replied:
– Oh, my lord! I hear the news of your son's death from your own mouth, – he said. At that moment, the Khan became very upset: "Alas, I have been defeated by words. Pour lead into the throat of the dombra! Take the musician and throw him before the dragon! Let the snake swallow him," he ordered. The musician played before the snake as well. The snake, enchanted by the music, stretched out its body and rolled a fist-sized gold piece to the musician. Kerbuka escaped death, received the blessings of the grieving people, and returned home laden with spoils.
