Tepenkök (Version V)
Once upon a time, there was a shepherd for a king. One day, while the shepherd was going somewhere with the king's only son, they came across a horse's head lying by the riverbank. The shepherd then said, “Who would call me the son of Tolybai the seer, and who would call you the noble steed?” and he hugged the horse's head and cried. The king's son reported this incident to his father. Upon hearing this, the king summoned the shepherd and said, “If you are a seer, identify if there is a steed among my five hundred horses that can race.” The shepherd inspected the king's horses but found none to his satisfaction and told the king, “There is no racing steed among your horses.” The king then gave the shepherd money and supplies, asking him to find a steed. The shepherd wandered from city to city, visiting all the markets but could not find a single steed. Finally, he bought a worn-out, mangy colt from another shepherd and returned to the king. The king ordered the shepherd, “There is a race in a month; you will enter this colt.” The shepherd agreed and sent the colt to join a herd of horses. Ten days before the feast, the king's son went to check on the herd and saw that the same worn-out, skinny colt was still being ridden by the shepherd. When he asked the shepherd, “How come you are riding the horse that the king is entering in the race?” the shepherd replied, “I have not seen any horse among your five hundred that is fit to race other than this one.” Then the race took place, and the colt named Tepengkök was brought back victorious. At that moment, the shepherd affectionately said to Tepengkök:
“May I be like your mane, soft as silk,
And may I be like your back, sturdy as a bucket.”
