The Bull's Roar (Version IV)
Once upon a time, there was a poor man who had only one camel. In the spring, his camel gave birth, but two days later, the calf died. The animal, left without its calf, would not graze, its udder ached, and it mournfully cried out. This situation deeply pained the poor man. The old man consulted with his only daughter. Then the daughter said to her father: – Why don't you announce to the people? Whoever can make this camel graze, I will marry that person, – she said. Upon hearing this, people began to talk about how the camel could only be made to graze with the sound of a dombra. Many dombra players came to try to make the camel graze, but the camel would not budge. The story of the camel spread throughout the region. Dombra players from distant places came, hoping to win the girl’s hand and test their skills. Among this group were dombra players of various ages. According to the condition, whoever made the camel graze would have the girl marry him. The girl brought the camel to the edge of the well, tied its lead around its neck, took the bucket in her hand, and prepared to milk it. Three dombra players agreed that the first turn would go to the oldest man. When the old man played the dombra, making it sound like the camel's mournful cries, the camel's sixty-two veins began to twitch and it started to graze. Sensing this, the girl held the camel's teat tightly and just as it was about to graze, she said to the old man: – It didn’t graze! Give the dombra to the next one, – she told the old man. This was the girl’s way of avoiding the old man. Thus, the tune played by the old man came to be known as "The Camel's Grazing." The young man who took the second turn played the dombra with a mournful sound. To not reveal her actions to those sitting nearby, the girl released the camel's teat and began to milk it after the tune had been played for a while. Thus, the girl was to be taken by the young man. The third dombra player did not get a turn. The boy, greatly disappointed for missing out, played a tune called "I Burned, I Suffered" in lament for losing the girl. After the three dombra players had finished playing their tunes, the old man, who was confident in his skills, looked at the girl and said: – My dear! I was the one who made the camel graze; you are being unjust. If you think what I said is in vain, let us three go our separate ways and play our tunes in different directions. Let’s see which of us this animal will follow, calling it "my calf," – he said. Although the girl knew who had made the camel graze, she was forced to comply with the old man's demand. As expected, the camel followed the old man closely, sniffing his coat. Seeing this, the people realized who had made the camel graze. After everyone had witnessed this, the old man returned to the girl and said: – My dear, do not be prone to deceit from now on; grow old with the partner of your choice, – and he gave her his genuine blessing and left her with the young man. Thus, the history of the tune known as "The Camel's Grazing," or in some places "The Noble Camel," came to be.
