The Lament of the Swan
Once upon a time, a beautiful girl and a musician boy fell in love with each other. One day, the boy set off on a long journey. When he returned safely and arrived at the girl's village, he found out that she had passed away shortly before. The villagers buried her at the top of a hill by the lake on the outskirts of the village. The boy went there and, mourning for his bride with his dombra, played a sorrowful tune all day long. In the middle of the lake, there was a small island inhabited by swans. The people living near the lake would always row out in a boat to collect the swan eggs whenever the swans laid them. While the boy was sitting there in sorrow for his beloved, he saw a lone swan flying restlessly, crying out for its chicks that it had lost.
- "In this world, every bird that flies and every animal that runs is mournful; all are sorrowful," the musician boy said as he added the swan's lament to his tune...
