The Sorrowful Girl (Version I)
Once there was an orphan girl. One day, in the early morning light, she was startled awake by someone kicking her. When she jumped up to see who it was, it was her stepmother. The cruel stepmother looked at the trembling, frightened girl and said: – Are you still lying down? Go and fill this bucket with berries! – and kicked the bucket towards the girl. The girl took the bucket and went to the mountains. Since the girl's father was moving, he went out the day before to search for two cows that had gone missing and, after finding them, returned home in the morning only to find his wife loading their belongings onto carts. As soon as he arrived, he got busy with the preparations for the move. Because they had many children, he did not even think to look for the girl. When they settled in their new place and were preparing to fetch water, one of the buckets turned out to be missing. Knowing her stepmother's nature, the girl ran to her father, crying. As the girl barely filled the bucket by noon and dragged herself home with an empty stomach, she found her household in disarray. Seeing this, she thought of her stepmother's cruelty and, longing for her real mother, cried bitterly. Just then, her father arrived, drenched in sweat from his horse, jumped off, embraced his daughter, and they both wept together. After a while, her father said, “Come, my child, let’s go,” to which the orphan girl, still crying, replied: – I don’t want to go, father, my stepmother won’t let me see the sun! – she said. Hearing this, the people felt pity for the girl. A musician composed a tune called "The Melancholy Girl" from this story.
