Yellow River (Version I)
When a rich man married off his daughter, he added the only daughter of a poor fiddler as a servant to the bride's dowry. The poor girl had no power to resist the rich man's authority, and she had no right to break the customs of her ancestors; the unfortunate girl went to servitude, crying. The girl’s "protector, my support" was her only brother. As he tearfully bid farewell to his sister, who was departing for servitude, he said: - "We have no choice but to endure the trials set by God. It seems we have seen enough of our togetherness. However, as they say, 'the one in a cloak comes back,' I still have hope. Take advantage of a moment when the good people of your new land are gathered, and without shame or hesitation, ask for permission to play the 'Sary Ozen' tune. If the opportunity arises, it may lead to something favorable. Dedicate the tune to your homeland, 'Sary Ozen,' and add your sorrow to it. You have the ability to create a soul-stirring melody," says the brother. The girl becomes a servant and goes to a foreign land. What she experiences is torment. She enters with the fire of the rich man and exits with his ashes. Deep sorrow, endless worries consume her spirit and fill her heart with grief. One day, while she was enduring her days in captivity, the good people of that land gathered at the rich man's house. The girl, who had expressed her sorrow and longing for her homeland through her two-stringed dombra, asks for permission to enter the house where the good people were gathered. Even though they drank the yellow kumys like water all day long, the good people, who were still unsatisfied, perked up when they heard the girl say she wanted to play a new tune. When the girl began to play, the good people, amazed by the servant's talent, nodded their heads and cheered from all sides. After listening to the tune, they asked the girl whose melody it was. The girl replied: "Fate bestowed suffering upon me before I was even born. I did not cling to my father’s skirt, nor did I fully enjoy my mother’s milk; I lost my two great trees at a young age and became an orphan. I spent my days at the rich man's door. Now, as I open my eyes and look around, what I see is this. I came to servitude under this roof. Behind me, my only brother remains, wiping his face with tears; my childhood friends, with whom I grew up, remain; and the 'Sary Ozen,' which quenched my thirst and washed away my dirt, remains. When I think of these, my heart burns with sorrow. My heart is filled with deep worries, and it is my longing for them. I named the tune 'Sary Ozen,'" she says. The good people were pleased with the girl's talent and freed her from servitude, sending her back to her homeland.
