Telqonyr (Version I)
In the early days when the Kazakhs and Mongols were at war, there were two orphan boys. The elder of the two orphans was gentle and had no connections, while the younger one was clever, fond of singing, curious about everything, and a dombra player. The ambitious youth often found it difficult to showcase his talent at celebrations due to a lack of resources. Even when he asked the well-off villagers for the hides of a couple of horses, they would not give him any. One day, he said to his brother: – Let’s not keep going like this; instead of being buried at home, let’s go to the other side of Altai and find something worthwhile! His brother agreed, and the two set off for the other side of Altai. They traveled on foot, wandering through the villages for a long time, and after fifteen days, they reached the Kalka people in Sarzhaylau. When they climbed to the top of a hill, they saw two houses set up side by side on the plain, about a horse's length apart. One house was a six-canvas white yurt, and the other was a small house. Tethered between the two houses was a fence with two horses tied up. The two boys planned to sneak in to take the horses, and at dusk, the younger brother left his brother on the hill and approached the house. In the fence, he saw two indistinguishable brown horses, one with a bell collar and the other with white shackles on its legs, tied up and unrecognizable. Since it was impossible to take the shackled horse, the younger brother eventually decided to take his brother to the small house, disguised as a traveler. When they reached the outside of the house and peeked through the window, they saw two young girls arguing, saying, “The gait of Telqonyr is not like that.” Knowing that there was no elder in the house, they thought they might as well talk to the girls, hoping for an opportunity to catch Telqonyr: “Assalamu alaikum!” they said as they entered the house. The girl sitting by the fire was taken aback, and one of them set down her dombra and climbed onto the ornate bed near the cauldron. The two boys took their seats respectfully, but the elegantly dressed girls did not pay attention to the two shabby, weary-looking youths. Unable to draw a response from the two boys, one of them picked up the dombra leaning against the wall and began to play beautifully. The girl was deeply intrigued by the melody and listened intently. The beautiful tune lifted the spirits of the two young girls, and eventually, they secretly took a liking to the two boys and invited them to stay. They asked, “Let’s set off tomorrow; let’s spend this night with music.” The boys agreed, and as dawn began to break, the two girls fell asleep. At that moment, the two boys took the key to the shackles hanging on the frame and freed Telqonyr from the fence, riding bareback and heading back to the other side of Altai. The girls remained in the embrace of sweet sleep. In the large house next to the small house lived an old man with a white beard, the owner of the horses. Despite his wealth and grandeur, the old man’s only happiness was his two daughters and the Telqonyr horse he had raised with care. The old man’s dream was to marry his daughters to the two boys who had grown up alongside them. Therefore, he promised the suitors who came to propose: “If this condition is fulfilled, I will give my daughters without a bride price.” However, such a match did not come about. When the brothers came, the old man had already set up a separate house for his daughters and arranged festivities for them. The girls sometimes went out hunting on Telqonyr. One day, when the old man went out for early prayers, he noticed that Telqonyr, which usually stayed in the fence, was missing. Learning that two boys had come to the house, the old man said: – Ah, Telqonyr must have gone to its destination; if it is meant to be, it will not leave, and if not, it will not come. This is what it means to be destined; now, let’s not make a fuss about the fact that Telqonyr has been taken by thieves; let’s wait for news at home. “Patience is the key to gold,” as long as my two daughters are with me, Telqonyr will find its way back. The boys had already arrived in their village with their swift horses. At that time, it was announced that a famous rich man was hosting a feast, and he sent out invitations for a horse race, saying, “I will give a prize for ten horses, and I will adorn the winner with a fine cloak.” The two boys prepared to enter Telqonyr in this race. When the time for the race approached, the villagers gathered on the hill, eagerly watching the road. Suddenly, two dark figures appeared side by side. Everyone was speculating and chatting. After that, the rich and the nobles wanted to buy Telqonyr at the price of a man. But the two orphans said: – Telqonyr is a guest that has come to us, a relative from our maternal side; we cannot sell it. Thus, they began to put sheep in the corral and horses in the pasture for the horse race. While they were doing this, it was announced that a grand feast was to take place, and it was said that the grand prize was five hundred sheep. The young waiters led them to a house on the outskirts. They informed them that the race would take place the next day. However, Telqonyr would not stay still even by the mama tree. The two boys were astonished by their horses' behavior, and when they decided to tie them up in a secluded place, Telqonyr dragged them straight to the large white yurt in the center of the village. In front of the honored guests, a dark-skinned young man was serving kumis from a beautifully crafted wooden ladle made of birch, pouring it into glasses. Among the seated guests, a short man, without lifting his head from his reclining position, asked the feast manager, who was coming in and out of the door: – Which clan do these two belong to that I am sharing a table with? I want to know. – he said mockingly. Then, the middle-aged nobleman sitting at the head of the house raised his head and said: – Though their clothes are shabby, they are decent young men; who knows, perhaps one of them is an artist? They might have come to our table for a meal; let them have a turn! If they have talent, let them show it, – he said, looking at the artists who were singing, playing the dombra, and blowing the flute in turn. The dombra, which had passed from hand to hand, finally reached the two boys. “If I can just touch the dombra,” thought the boy who had been waiting for a long time, tuning it to the right pitch, he began to play, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, and sometimes soaring high with the melody. The audience was delighted and offered them kumis, saying “Well done!” As he played beautifully, the old man, who had been lying on the bed like a white cotton ball, suddenly exclaimed: – Oh, my dear Telqonyr, you have found your way back to your stake! It seems that God has brought you back to my embrace! – he exclaimed, pulling his head from the pillow. Then the audience said: Indeed, there was a rumor that two boys had taken Telqonyr; could these two be them? Tell us your truth; from which village do you come and what are you doing? – they began to inquire about the boys. They narrated how they had taken Telqonyr and apologized to the elder. The elder then said: – “If one comes before you, forgive them for your ancestor’s sake,” said your ancestor, Kazakh; I forgive your sins. I also know why you have come to this village; my wish has been fulfilled. I have betrothed my elder daughter to your elder and my younger daughter to your younger; I have given you my blessing, may there be a wedding upon a wedding! – he said, spreading his hands in blessing. Thus, this melody has been known as “Telqonyr” ever since.
