Saryn (Version I)
When Korkyt turned twenty, a holy man with a white beard down to his waist and a white staff that touched the sky came to him and gave him another revelation in his dream: "O Korkyt, in this world, forty years of life are written for you, and you will not live beyond that!" When he woke up, he realized it was a dream, but the words of the holy man remained in his ears as if they were real. After this, Korkyt became very anxious and sought a way to avoid death. He mounted his Jalmyaya and set off to wander the world. One day, while Korkyt was wandering in the steppe, he encountered a group of people digging in the ground. "Hey, what are you digging for?" he asked. They replied, "We are digging Korkyt the holy man's grave!" Hearing this, Korkyt turned his Jalmyaya and headed towards another direction. However, exhausted and wanting to rest, he encountered more grave diggers ahead. When he inquired, they too turned out to be those digging Korkyt's grave. Thus, despite Korkyt's attempts to escape death and his travels to the four corners of the earth, he kept meeting grave diggers preparing for him. The old saying "Wherever you go - there is Korkyt's grave!" originated from this. After becoming completely worn out and desperate, Korkyt thought that if he reached the center of the earth, his soul would remain, and he arrived at his homeland by the Syr Darya. There, he slaughtered his Jalmyaya and covered his black kobyz with its skin. Then, to ensure that no grave would be dug from the water's surface, he spread the saddle of Jalmyaya on the waters of the Syr and settled on top of it. In that state, he sat down in sorrow and began to play a mournful tune on his black kobyz. One refrain of this tune has been remembered by generations. It is said that Korkyt lived on the surface of the Syr for a hundred years. During this time, he played his kobyz continuously, keeping death away from him. When Korkyt played the kobyz, the wind would calm, the water flow would stop, and all living creatures would listen in silence.
