The Lame Horse (Version III)
The famous Genghis Khan, whose horse's hoof reached far and wide, had a son named Jochi. Jochi also became a khan. The inheritance he received from his illustrious father was the vast steppe stretching between the Ulytau and the Azov Sea, where he first raised the yurt of the Golden Horde state. He united the nomadic people who rushed like wild horses and exercised his command over them. Jochi Khan was the first child born to Genghis Khan and Börte, a girl from the Konyrat tribe. Besides Jochi, Börte also bore sons named Chagatai, Ogedei, and Tolui, and it is known from the chronicles that he wished to give them separate shares and establish separate states. However, as the throne was about to be inherited, upon Genghis's passing, the territories among his children became fragmented and scattered like the pieces of a broken pot. Among the children born from his own lineage, Jochi Khan was perhaps the one who accompanied Genghis Khan earlier and waved the banner of victory in many bloody battles. However, there was one issue that gnawed at Genghis Khan's heart like a festering wound. This was the story that in an earlier battle, his wife Börte was captured by the Merkit, and when Genghis Khan rescued her, it was said that Jochi had been involved in the matter. "The mother's is the truth, the father's is questionable," as the saying goes, this situation kept Genghis Khan in a state of perpetual doubt. Nevertheless, Jochi's unwavering filial affection, his formidable bravery, military prowess, and loyalty continually dispelled his father's doubts. Thus, the time when a rift began to form between father and son, Genghis Khan and Jochi Khan, was during the period when they were about to attack the Syr Darya and Amu Darya regions. The reason for this was that among the nomadic people who wintered in the Kyzylkum and Karakum deserts and migrated in the summer, there was also the Konyrat tribe. It is known that the Konyrats were Jochi's maternal relatives. Therefore, Jochi hesitated to spill blood against his maternal kin. Even though he had the strength and power, one of the reasons Jochi besieged the city of Urgench for six months and called for negotiations was this. Of course, such hesitation and leniency were contrary to Genghis Khan's nature and a blemish on his reputation. This is how the discord between father and son began. Gradually, Jochi Khan began to show signs of weariness with his father's bloodthirsty campaigns, hesitating to launch attacks on the western and southern lands. Instead, he made it a habit to settle his yurt on the grassy, breezy hills of the steppe, gathering singers, musicians, hunters, warriors, and strong young men around him to enjoy life and revelry. He would pour the yellow kumys and, at times, enjoy the performances of skilled singers and talented musicians, while at other times, he would hunt wild horses in the vast steppe between Saryarka and the Syr Darya, releasing falcons over its shimmering rivers and lakes. It is said that Jochi Khan had more than eight hundred birds, including his hooded falcon, bell-hunting hawk, and ring-tailed goshawk. In the autumn months, the cries of the falcons and the swift flight of the goshawks would echo along the banks of the rivers Kulanotpes, Sarysu, and Atasu, creating an impression of a bloody battle taking place under the sky. In such moments, Jochi Khan would exclaim, "My falcons' battles are more interesting than my father's invincible army!" Of course, would such behavior of the son, whom Genghis Khan relied upon, go unnoticed? Not only did it not go unnoticed, but rumors, twisting and turning, reached him that were almost indistinguishable from the truth. Such gossip did not sit well with Genghis Khan, who considered himself the ruler of the heavens. It stirred up the doubts that had long been festering within him, causing him to become agitated. Moreover, when Genghis Khan wanted to understand the situation better and summoned Jochi a couple of times, Jochi, caught up in festivities, did not pay heed. This behavior of Jochi further enraged Genghis Khan, who ordered a merciless punishment in his fury. The punishment of the Genghis dynasty is well-known. The guilty must be bound and have their spine broken. With this intention, Genghis Khan's secret forces awaited the moment when Jochi would be alone while hunting. As the saying goes, "A hunted enemy will not escape," one day, while hunting wild horses with just a few companions, Jochi Khan fell into the trap set by his pursuers. Having emerged victorious from many bloody battles, Jochi Khan did not surrender easily. After all his companions were killed, he fought fiercely alone. However, the superior strength of the selected enemy overwhelmed him. They first cut off one of his arms with a sword. After that, bleeding and clutching the reins of his horse, Jochi's spine was broken. In the shimmering steppe, just as Jochi Khan's soul was about to leave his body, a messenger appeared, kicking up dust on the horizon. This was a messenger hastening to deliver Genghis Khan's pardon and forgiveness. Not just a pardon, but also the curse that proclaimed, "May molten lead be poured into the throat of the one who announces Jochi's death!" What could be done now? The deed was done. No matter what power there was, could Jochi be brought back to life?! Right there, the bloodied mob used the excuse that "the khan's son was killed while hunting wild horses!" and took Jochi Khan's lifeless body back to the yurt. Now how to inform Genghis Khan?! The people were distressed, colliding like ice floes. No one dared to step forward and reveal the truth. But could they hide such bad news?! It was impossible with Genghis Khan. Thus, the people were left in a state of shock. At that moment, there was a bard named Ketbuga, who was from the Nayman tribe and would often kneel before Genghis Khan. When the people were at a loss, Ketbuga stepped forward and headed to the khan's yurt. As he crossed the threshold, Ketbuga said: – O my lord, may the mercy of Tengri rain upon you, and may peace be upon all those under your command! Genghis Khan, who was troubled by his own decree, replied darkly: – What do you want?! Then Ketbuga the bard said: – My lord, I had a terrible dream today. From that dream, my heart is filled with sorrow, and I have come to share my grief with you! – and began to play his dombra. At first, the sound of thousands of hooves thundered across the steppe, stirring the spirit. For a moment, Genghis Khan did not pay attention, but the mournful sound that emerged from the dombra weighed heavily on his heart. That mournful sound intensified, echoing like the breath of irreparable regret. The thunder of the thousands of hooves that had just raced now felt like the lament of the unfortunate bearer of bad news. – Oh my! – exclaimed Genghis Khan. – What is this wonder! Why does my heart feel as if Jochi has died! As soon as these words left Genghis Khan's mouth, the people outside, who had been trapped and confused, cried out, "Our lord has spoken, we have lost Jochi!" They began to wail and weep. Now that Genghis Khan had realized the truth of the matter, he bit his finger and wept bitterly right there. At that moment, Ketbuga the bard found his voice and, striking his dombra, said: “O our lord, Genghis Khan! What does the dombra sing, Its voice wails and cries, Listen to this... The lame wild horse, the cunning wild horse, The wild horse fleeing from afar, In the boundless steppe, It has encountered your child, Leaping from ridge to ridge. The lame wild horse, Jochi Khan, In the deserted steppe, In the rugged terrain, Dwelling in the wild, The herd of wild horses galloping. Chasing the lame wild horse, Riding a swift steed, Joining the herd of frightened wild horses, Playing and racing along, Death is the work of Tengri, The wild horse speaks of its fate, The wild horse and the steed are both frightened, The galloping wild horse is exhilarated, It has chewed and killed your child, Torn apart and devoured him, The herd of wild horses is terrified. The people have not spoken, The dombra has sung and lamented This is what the dombra has revealed to you, my lord! Do not cast blame on others, The one who has captivated your child Is that cunning wild horse, the wild horse, Your child has died – Jochi Khan! Believe this, my lord!” The khan's decree is not to be taken lightly; right there, Ketbuga carved the surface of his dombra, and molten lead was poured into it as a mark of the bearer of bad news. The hollow on the dombra's surface was formed from that moment on. After the mournful news reached him, Genghis Khan tormented himself internally, drowning in the poison of regret, rolling over for three days and three nights. He did not find solace in any comforting words, and grief consumed him. At that time, Genghis Khan's first wife, the wise Börte, gathered her thoughts and showed resilience in the face of the situation, saying to her husband: – My lord, while you are grieving, your people are about to rise up in rebellion! – Oh, what could make my people rebel?! – replied Genghis Khan. – It seems there is a dispute that has divided your people, – said Börte. – The reason is that a wealthy man, having taken a liking to his friend, gifted him a gold piece the size of a horse's head. He thought that when the time came, he would get his return. However, after some time passed, the friend showed no signs of returning the favor. Then the wealthy man, feeling offended, asked for his gold back. The friend refused, and a dispute arose, leading them to seek judgment from the elders, but the elders did not act justly; half said, "He should return what he was given," while the other half said, "He is not obliged to return it." Thus, the people are divided. Upon hearing this, Genghis Khan was upset: – Ah, what is this! The judgment was not fair. The one who can accept a gift should also know how to give it back, shouldn't he?! It seems this was what Börte had been waiting for: – My lord, be patient! Tengri has given you a child, and when the time comes, He takes him back. One must accept the will of the Almighty. Tengri has gifted you Jochi, and now that the time has come, you too must know how to return him without suffering! – she said. After hearing these comforting words from Börte, Genghis Khan regained his composure and lifted his spirits. At that time, there was a loyal servant named Dombayul who had grown up alongside Jochi since childhood. Dombayul had a special affection for Jochi. After Jochi's death, Dombayul swore an oath and vowed to eradicate the wild horse lineage from the earth. Thus, he dug a pit from the eastern vast steppe, stretching from the Tarbagatai Mountains to the Ili River, where no wild horse could pass. To the west, he deepened the channels of the Kulanotpes and Terisakhan rivers. Then he raised three steeds named Qabanqula, Ankey, and Boken and set out to hunt wild horses. The wild horses, trapped between the west and east, rushed into the Betpak Dala desert. This was exactly what Dombayul had been waiting for. He mercilessly slaughtered the exhausted wild horses in the desert. The vast steppe of Betpak was filled with the stench of blood. Then, one day, five wild horses managed to escape from Dombayul's pursuit and crossed the Shu River. As soon as they reached the banks of the Shu, Qabanqula died from exhaustion.
