Bodau Council
In the Xinjiang region, there is a famous bi, renowned musician Beisembi Donenbayuly (1825-1898) who composed a piece called "Bodau Kenges." The legend of this piece is narrated by the poet Nukesh Badiguly as follows: "To resolve the disputes of the Abak-Kerey people in Altai that had gone unresolved, a large gathering was held. White yurts were pitched on the lush meadows of the Alkabek River in the region of Kabа. This event is said to have taken place in 1853. The respected figures holding the reins from the Argin, Naiman, Kerey, and Uaq tribes were invited to the Bodau Kenges. The esteemed sultan Qunanbay Uskenbayuly, specially invited to the grand white yurt, arrives... The Kerey bi Maman brings along a young man he has been mentoring, Beisembi. It seems that this was a time when Beisembi was just beginning to engage in such gatherings. When the appointed time arrived, those who would participate in the decision-making gathered in the house where Qunanbay was staying and began to take their places. The younger Beisembi was given a spot near the threshold. Just as it seemed that the intended individuals had gathered, Qunanbay sat down and asked: – So, how shall we begin the dispute? Shau bi, who was the claimant from the Kerey side, urged the sitting judges, saying, "Let someone start the discussion." However, the authority of Sultan Qunanbay intimidated everyone, and no one stepped forward. Then, Beisembi, sitting by the threshold, straightened up and spoke: – Sultan ağa, how shall we begin our discussion? – said Beisembi, – Argin and Naiman were our elders. However, when we moved from the distant Syr region, we did not settle due to the thickness of Argin ağa's whip, and when we moved from Kalba, we did not settle due to the thickness of Naiman ağa's whip. Thus, it seems as if our center has been hollowed out, as if our abode has been disrupted, and we are a people in search of a place to settle. The land we have come to is in the midst of dense Durbits and Urankhais. These people have no cradle marks or bed patterns; they only know the saying, "If you take, it’s peace; if you give, it’s my dog." Therefore, seeing the arrogance, shouldn’t the son of a brother who has not been hollowed out and whose abode has not been disrupted, speak first? The new demand, the bold words of the young man, and the well-reasoned arguments captivated the audience. The proud and dignified Sultan Qunanbay, resting on two cushions, raised his head and glanced at Beisembi. Then he began to speak: – It will happen, it will happen! – said Qunanbay. – It seems like it is about to happen! He is a young man whose words the people will believe, and whose voice can intimidate the enemy... Oh, brethren, hasn’t the gathering already begun?! The young man is speaking the right words: you have seen the dominance of the strong and have been pushed away from the people, you have lost your land. If I do not grieve over that, I will not rejoice. The birth of a child like you from Kerey is a pride for all Kazakhs. Let us give the reins of authority in this matter to this young man, and we shall be mere listeners! Qunanbay's favorable demeanor brightened the spirits of those present and seemed to unite their benevolent intentions. At that Bodau Kenges, Beisembi became the chief judge and made a decision that left no dispute unresolved. The relatives reached an agreement and found harmony. Qunanbay, who observed everything without missing a beat, later remarked to Beisembi as the gathering dispersed, "You are a speaker whose words flow with resolution, a leader to whom the people will listen, a man with a powerful voice and a sacred mind." Thus, Beisembi, wishing for this gathering to serve as a model for future generations, played his piece titled "Bodau Kenges."
