Күйдің қалай туылғандығы туралы мынадай шежіре бар. Есімі ел көңілінде ұялаған күйші көрер тірлігін де ақырластырып қалады. Өмірінің соңғы кезінде ауру азабын шегіп, үзілер соңғы дәмін күтіп жатқан күйшіге күллі қазақтың бірталай жердегі игі жақсылары жиналып барады. Көңілін сұрап, жақсы жұбатуларын айтып отырған топқа әлден уақытта Тәттімбет, ауру төсегіне сүйеулі тұрған жан серігі – домбырасын алып, ғажайып бір күй шертеді. Күй аяқтала сала отырған топ бұл күйдің қайсы күй екендігін сұрап білгілері келеді. Сонда күйші, бұл күйімнің аты «Көкейкесті» болсын дейді. Күйшіні күзетіп, сусын беріп, ажалмен таласып отырған шәкірті әрі інісі Жақсымбет күйші табанда бұл күйді жатқа алады. Күй осылай туылып, кейін Жақсымет арқылы елге тарап, заманымызға жатады.

There is a legend about how the melody was born. The name of the musician, who has settled in the hearts of the people, will also be remembered in his final moments. In the last days of his life, suffering from illness and waiting for the last taste of life, many good people from various parts of Kazakhstan gather around the musician. After inquiring about his well-being and offering comforting words, at some point, Tattimbet, taking his companion – the dombra, which was leaning against his sickbed, plays a wonderful melody. As soon as the melody ends, the group sitting around wants to know the name of this piece. Then the musician says, let the name of this melody be "Kökeykesti." His student and younger brother, Jaqsymbet, who is watching over the musician, providing him with drinks, and battling with death, memorizes this melody on the spot. Thus, the melody is born and later spreads to the people through Jaqsymbet, reaching our time.
