Escaped from prison
Even though Lavochkin was not well acquainted with Kazakh music, he had listened to many Kazakh singers and musicians, and his eyes had opened a bit. After listening to the music, he shares his feelings and impressions with Kurmangazy. Kurmangazy is pleased that his friend’s thoughts resonate with his own. The reason we say this is that the rhythm of horse galloping that comes in the middle of the piece seems to hint at everything, along with all the warmth the musician feels for his mother, as if escape is also on his mind. The two captives discuss the sharpness of the musical language and even share a laugh. They mention that the bad dombra has had some influence, and they touch upon the uplifting power of music. At that moment, one of the prison guards informs Lavochkin that his mother has come to visit him. He goes to the room permitted by the prison authorities to meet his mother. She brings food she has prepared for him. She discreetly indicates that there is a steel saw hidden in the bread. After his mother leaves, Lavochkin brings the food back to the cell and recounts what happened to Kurmangazy. They devise an escape plan and share their thoughts with the guard who had previously brought them the dombra. He promises to help them. One night, the two cut their shackles with the steel saw and prepare to escape. Once the escape plan is fully developed, Kurmangazy cheerfully asks, “Are we going to leave this event unnoticed as well?” and plays another piece. After listening to this piece, Lavochkin tells Kurmangazy, “Ah, this is truly the escape tune; one of the officials might hear it and figure out our plan, enough,” and he laughs, stopping the music. Thus, the piece is named “Escape from Prison.” Indeed, the piece “Escape from Prison” has a relentless galloping rhythm from beginning to end. Its momentum never weakens. It only comes to an end after a strong push. The speed of the piece is such that not all skilled players can perform “Escape from Prison” on a single dombra at their own pace until the end. In an orchestra, playing it at one’s own pace is even more challenging. It is said that while Kurmangazy was playing this piece, a bureaucrat happened to pass by the prison. He stopped and listened to the piece from start to finish, shaking his head and saying, “This Kazakh dombra playing does not please me; I hope he doesn’t escape, stay strong!” and he reported this to the prison authorities. Lavochkin later heard this news through the friendly guard and joked with Kurmangazy about it. Although it is not explicitly stated what circumstances inspired the creation of “Escape from Prison,” those who understand music can hear the sound of thundering hooves in its notes.
