The Nightingale's Lament
In the early 1860s, Dauletkeri ruled the Kyzylkurt and Nogai tribes. Although his father was Shyghai, Dauletkeri did not enjoy governing the people. He only held this position for a short time according to the "father's law." However, Dauletkeri's rule over these tribes did not negatively affect Kurmangazy, as the two musicians met during these years. One was Kurmangazy, who had a fondness for Isatai and came from Kyzylkurt, and the other was Dauletkeri, a noble born from Shyghai, the younger brother of Bokey. Despite their differing views on life, a great force emerged that brought them closer together. That force turned out to be the power of art, the power of music. When they first met, they were somewhat cool towards each other, but soon the ice of unfamiliarity melted, and the two musicians quickly found common ground. This is because wherever Kurmangazy sat or walked, he often spoke of Isatai and Makhambet. Regardless, such stories did not particularly please Dauletkeri. However, to avoid irritating Dauletkeri further, Kurmangazy refrained from going "up front" where he was sitting.
One day, due to a land dispute involving Kyzylkurt, he took one of his favorite students, Kokbala, and went to Papas's village, where the bi (judge) warmly welcomed the musician. After finishing his business, he resolved the issue in favor of Kyzylkurt. First, Papas played a tune. Kurmangazy liked the tune very much. "What a wonderful tune this is, it sounds so beautiful!" said Kurmangazy. Papas mentioned that the name of the tune was "Bulbul." At that moment, Kurmangazy played a tune. Now, Papas asked what the name of this tune was. Kurmangazy replied, "This was my bulbul." Then Papas stood up and said, "No, brother, this is not a bulbul; this is the bulbul's chick." Thus, this tune became known as "The Bulbul's Chick."
