Kurmangazy stays in the Urkit prison for quite a while. Perhaps because he had escaped several times before, they keep a very tight watch on the musician here. Not to mention anything else, his every move is constantly monitored. They peer in through the window and the door, and all of his behavior is in the hands of the guards. Kurmangazy takes the old dombra that one of the guards brought him and starts playing again. In response to the people who are watching him day and night through the window and the door, he composes a piece called "Through the Window and the Door." Kurmangazy's dombra playing pleases the prisoners, and they all band together to speak with the prison chief to get permission for Kurmangazy to play. A Russian friend named Sergey helps with all of this. He asks about Kurmangazy's biography and understands at least a bit of what the musician stammers out. Sergey’s hints are immediately felt by Kurmangazy. From that day on, Kurmangazy does not hide anything from Sergey. One day, gathering his courage, he tells Sergey that he is thinking about escaping and asks for advice. While returning late from working outside, his companion finds a way to help Kurmangazy escape.
