The Lament of the Poor
On his way back home through Zhem-Sagyz, Kurmangazy stops by a village. He approaches a small house on the edge of the village and makes a sound from outside, but there is no response from inside. Instead, he hears a sorrowful voice weeping and lamenting. Curious about what is happening, Kurmangazy enters the house and sees an old woman crying bitterly.
Kurmangazy greets the old woman and asks about her well-being. The old woman replies:
– I had only one son. Our village's elder accused him of "stealing my horse," sent his messengers to beat him, and he was killed by the whip. Now I am left alone in this house, mourning, my dear, – she says. Sharing in the mother's grief, Kurmangazy comforts her:
– Do not cry, mother; crying will not bring back the one who is gone. As long as the people, the community, and the relatives are safe, you will not suffer hardship, – he reassures her.
Having witnessed the old woman's sorrow with his own eyes, the musician reflects:
– The poor are all in the same plight, – and he plays his composition titled "The Lament of the Poor" with deep emotion.
