The Legend of Three States
Once upon a time, there was a rich man named Alqabekte. He had two nurtured mares and a brown colt that was born to them. Its gait was smooth, its mane was fine, and it was quite beautiful. The rich man had another beautiful horse as well. Out of fear of thieves, he decided to keep the horses in a yurt at night. The rich man's daughter, Saulem, was in charge of guarding these horses. Saulem was a musician and a singer, and she was very fond of playing the dombra and singing.
One day, a thief named Mukey, who lived in the Karatau mountains of Bogda, came to this village with two accomplices to steal the rich man's horses. However, despite their attempts to catch the horses, several days passed without success. Finally, they learned from the locals that the rich man's daughter guarded the horses at night, and that Saulem was a musician and a singer who would perk up at the sound of the dombra being played. Thinking he had found the girl's weakness, Mukey said to his companions:
- I will distract the girl by playing the dombra, and you should do whatever it takes to take the horses! - he said, and in the evening, he went to the yurt where the girl was sitting and said:
- My lady, I have come to hear your tune. - Accepting this invitation, the girl began to play her dombra. However, feeling shy around the stranger, she couldn't play with inspiration. Then Mukey took the girl's dombra and began to play a tune called "Qos Qaghu." The freely played melody immediately captivated the girl, and she completely forgot that she was supposed to be guarding the horses. After playing for a while, when his companions had finished taking the horses out, Mukey bid farewell to the girl and left. The girl regretted not asking the name of the musician.
At one point, realizing that the horses were missing, the girl was afraid to tell her parents and instructed the other girls nearby: "Let's not say a person came; just say we fell asleep." While the rich man was sitting in despair, having lost hope of finding his horses, the girl began to play the tune that the young man had played earlier. Since her father had never heard his daughter play such a tune before, he was astonished and began to ask: "Where did you learn this?" The girl told the truth. Then the rich man said:
- My child, why didn't you tell me before? The horses have been found, haven't they?! - he said joyfully. After that, he sought out the musician who had played the dombra up the Irtysh River. He listened to the music. One day, he heard the same tune that his daughter had played from the house of Shakabay Makhtazhan. When the rich man inquired about the tune, he was told:
- This is the "Qos Qaghu" of Mukey from Karatau. - Then the rich man went to Erenqabyrga to find Mukey, and there he saw two of his horses tied up in the yard. Sensing the visitor's purpose, Mukey came out to greet him and hosted him. After the guest had rested, Mukey took his dombra and played:
I have mounted your teleqonyr, this is its gait, I have mounted your Maidazhali, this is its gait, and this is the "Qos Qaghu" that brought you here. - and played three tunes for him.
