The Lament of the Samruk
Once upon a time, there was a bird called Samruk. It had no enmity with any living creature. In the summer, it would come to this region to lay its eggs and, after raising its chicks, would leave for another region to spend the winter. It would nest on the tops of tall trees or on cliffs, laying two eggs each year. One year, it built a nest on the edge of a deep cliff and incubated two eggs, which hatched into chicks. One day, both the male and female went out in search of food, and when they returned, they saw a predatory bird pecking and eating one of their chicks. "Alas, it must be because we couldn't bring food in time!" lamented the Samruk, and now wishing for its lone chick's well-being, it nurtured it until it could fly. One day, when it sent its chick out of the nest, the chick fell into the deep cliff. "Now my only one has disappeared!" it cried out in sorrow and returned to its dwelling. The following year, it came back to nest again and laid two eggs. One day, the female bird chewed an egg and flew out of the nest, resting in the shade of a nearby tree while watching the nest. Suddenly, a black bird flew down from the sky, dangling its two legs, landed in the nest, and then flew straight back up. The Samruk was astonished and thought, "This is not ordinary; there is a secret here." As it turned out, the bird that had flown down from the sky was a predatory bird. It brought one of its own eggs and took one of the Samruk's eggs away. Knowing this, the Samruk wept for its chick and returned to its winter dwelling. The lament of that humble bird became known as "The Lament of Samruk."
