Once upon a time, in the Mangystau Peninsula, there was a wealthy man who had a wife named Balbikе. Balbikе was both wise and respected by her people. However, she could not bear children, so the wealthy man took a young wife in addition to Balbikе. A child was born from the second wife, and the wealthy man's affection shifted to his young wife and the child. The absence of children deeply troubled Balbikе. She became sad and, grieving, took her dombra and played to comfort herself. One day, there was a celebration in the village, and Balbikе played the dombra at the event. The people eagerly listened to the melodies she played. Especially, an old man who felt the sorrowful tune of Balbikе's last performance said: – Oh, my dear! Your two-stringed bal burau, which comes from ten fingers, is indeed a lamenting song, – he sighed. The other listeners present there also remarked: – Yes, this is not just an ordinary tune; it has become a sorrowful melody born from the bal burau. Thus, the melody played by Balbikе became known among the people as "Bal Burau."
