Four Walking Melodies
In the chaotic times of oppression and enmity from the government, the people who fled from Altai, searching for peace and freedom, flocked to Mori, Barkol, and Gansu. The government troops chasing after these fleeing people massacred the innocent, filling the rear of the Kazakh migration with the bones of livestock and humans.
Amidst this turmoil, eleven young men separated from their people and faced persecution from the enemy. The young men, fleeing in the direction they could, soon realized they had ended up in a desolate sandy land without their homeland, and in their hunger and thirst, they resorted to slaughtering their horses and were left on foot. Eventually, as their numbers dwindled day by day, only four young men reached the people near Barkol. One of the four was Naumel Ibyrayuly, who, after greeting the people and quenching his longing for several days, took his dombra in hand and, day and night, pondered with an unknown melody, ultimately composing the piece "Four on Foot."
